Okay, I detailed strip my MKIII because it was extremely dirty. After about an hour of disassembly and cleaning I started to put the gun back together. Everything was going smoothly until the last step. The ms housing installation. I press the hammer up with my punch as usual but when I secure on the slide there is no spring tension to close it. This happened to me before but it was usually because the hammer leg would move but I am completely puzzled. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your time.

P.S. It was my first time detail stripping the MKIII and I used http://www.guntalk-online.com/detailstrip.htm#bolt for my sources.

If there is no tension on the mainspring when you close it, it is probably because you do not have that strut on the hammer in the correct position. I believe you also need to have the UNLOADED magazine fully inserted so you can fully depress the trigger while pointing the pistol upward. The Ruger manual has complete instructions and you can find more help at guntalk-online and Youtube.
You'll get it!!Many of us have been where you are now.

Until the bolt stop is installed (part of the mainspring housing) there is no tension on the bolt. The recoil spring uses the bolt stop as the anchor point for the spring. The recoil spring is part of the bolt when assembled and the bolt stop will go up thought the rear of the bolt and past the recoil spring wings at the mainspring insertion point of reassembly. Ensure that your receiver is fully aligned on the frame by inserting the bolt stop downward through the top of the receiver before attempting to insert the mainspring up through the frame well.

This sometimes happens to me and I find must press the trigger and then the hammer up. This should do it for you. Jim
