There may have been a time when Americans recognized that there is evil in the world and that periodically we are called upon to protect this great nation from this evil, but that time has past. Young parents today want to believe that their children will never have to go off to war, and they seem to flock to "leaders" who tell them that if we just find the right words to use with our enemies we can resolve all issues. My parents went through WWII, and while they were unhappy when I went off to Vietnam in 1970 they understood that it was necessary (and contrary to the current politically correct way to view that war, we were there to stop the Communists from taking over a friendly, if flawed nation. The "domino theory" was ridiculed, but after we abandoned our mission in southeast Asia, Cambodia and Laos did in fact follow Vietnam down the path to Communist dictatorships.) None of my own children served in the military, and I have no doubt that my children absolutely do not want their children to serve (despite that I, their father, served for 24 years). They like others seem to believe that the world can be viewed as they wish it to be, and not how it really is. We will again, undoubtedly, pay the price for not understanding or preparing for war, and as always, the price will be the blood and lives of our best and bravest.
