Got T-boned in my 2014 Jeep Patriot coming home from food shopping yesterday. The impact put the jeep on its side and sliding until being stopped by a concrete sign post in a car wash. Somehow after it stopped it got righted and I don't know how. The police, fire department and EMTs came. Ended up being taken to the hospital emergency room where I spent 8 hours having scans and tests done finally being released with a fractured sternum. Biggest problem now is the pain when sitting down and getting up. Pain meds and ice pack is helping. I had called my son to get the groceries from the jeep and take them to my house. When he picked me up from the hospital he said that the jeep looked to be totaled. Just what I needed at 80 years old: a new car. But at least I'll be alive to drive it.

Keep comfortable and get all healed up.
Gotta share too, I bought a new Patriot in 2010. I gave it to my boy 5 years ago and he's mostly trashed it, but it keeps running and has been a very decent car.

Years ago I fractured my sternum in a car accident. It takes a while to heal up. Glad you are still here.

JPB. Has your doctor prescribed lidocaine patches for you pain? That's what my doc did for me after my wreck in 2020. They said my sternum was fractured in four places and it hurt like hell. Those patches made a big difference regarding the pain.
I'm glad you made it out OK. I wish I knew how to send a picture. You look at my truck and it's a wonder I survived at all.

Sounds like a failure to yield right of way situation. Did either of you get a ticket?Ouch, that had to/has to hurt ..... as for your Jeep just make sure that the other person's insurance covers all the co$t$ . . . . . and, go slow, a sternum does not heal fast

For the sternum: if you have to cough or sneeze, try hugging a pillow to your chest (after checking with your care provider). I was told to do this after heart surgery, and believe me, it works.

Because I can. Because of all the fatal accidents lately from drivers who don't speak or read English, immigrants getting drivers licenses from states who cater to different languages and illegal aliens.
I know for a fact that California DMV has written driving exams in multiple languages.

I can't speak to a fractured sternum from personal experience. But I have treated folks with Flail chest (the sternum splits and the ribs don't allow for proper inflation of the lungs). From the personal aspect, I did have the docs use a saw to split my sternum in two. Then of course they got out the rib spreaders and opened me up like a can of tuna. That hurts a bit afterwards. Of course they always sort of put it back together. In my case it's wired. Sorta like they would do a broken jaw.
Was given a lidocaine patch in the emergency room. It helped a bit. Was prescribed tramadol 25mg plus Tylenol or Ibuprofen and ice packs. The combination is helping.
Does not sound like something I would like done to me.
If the pain gets to be too much do not hesitate to demand stronger meds from your doc. After lung surgery years ago the pain was unbearable. Fentanyl patches, 100 micrograms, helped enormously. Worth the later effort to stop using this drug.
