I got an email from lipseys today and thought that this forum would be all abuzz about the 4 5/8" barreled 45 Colt Flat Tops they announced. I picked up a 5.5" but many were wanting the shorter barrel and they listened. Maybe this has already been mentioned and I may have missed it. http://www.lipseysguns.com/post/Ruger-Flattop-45-Colt-45-ACP-Convertible-Stainless-4-5-8.aspx

I wish they would come out with the same model in 44mag! I just don't want to buy more stuff for reloading....dies, cases, bullets. Wow, a 4.624 Bisley 44mag, the stuff of dreams!! Congrats on your guns

I guess I'm just hard headed. I don't care for a gun that you have to load light for I already have 3 45colts in the blackhawk and don't want to have to keep the ammo seperate to keep from shooting hot loads in one that is weaker. That's why I went to rugers in the first place. They are like tanks and when you go to the reloading manuals they always list a hotter loading for rugers because of the strength of the guns. If I only shot factory loads this would be a fine gun as most factory 45 colt loads are weak loads for older guns. I have some 45's that are great hunting loads that would be too hot for the smaller framed guns.

No ... not hardheaded! The .45 Colt flattops just doesn't fit your hunting needs! And that is ok! Myself, on the other hand, Tier 2 loads moving a 255 SWC at 1100 is just fine... and general purpose loads in the 900-1000fps range are perfect.... for me that is. I've no need for top end 'Ruger Only Loads' as I am not out to slay the African Elephant or Buffalo with it. My purpose is target, SD, and general woods gun. No more, no less. So loads in the ~20,000psi range are perfect.

reference : Brian Pearce on .45 Colt PDF The .45 Colt Flattop is equivalent to the New Vaquero in .45 Colt .

I want to use top end loads, because I will start going to the Tongass in '13, and need the protection factor. The Bisley grip, for me, does not have as much muzzle-flip with big loads. I'll bide my time for Lipsey's or Talo to do a special run. I understand Accusport had a run, have not seen one on gunbroker. Congrats to y'all who have one in 45colt, beautiful revolver, great cartridge.

Wonderful! Very glad to see it. There is no need to "magnumize" the .45 Colt. It gets the job done just as it is.

Looks like Alaska. They just have some teddy bears up there.... Bring your .22 or a partner you can out run. Just kidding :) . Anyway, that's why Ruger offers the BH, Bisley, Vaquero, and RH, SRH :) . We have choices for all occasions!

The .45 Colt is an amazing cartridge with longevity never anticipated by Mason when he designed it for the Colt SAA. But it took Ruger and his large frames for the pioneer loaders to recognize and develop it's modern potential starting in the late '50s. We are fortunate to live now to have the .45 guns and loads to use. The .44 Mag overshadowed it for too long but shouldn't have. That's why I like my large frame .45s.

But I'm glad for the Lipsey's mid-frame flat tops as well and most of mine are in .44 Special. The mid-frames have a niche as a lighter carry and fun gun. And yet when needed, the .44 Special has greater potential in the mid-frames than the .45 Colt. Nowhere near as much as my .45s in large frames. But with the .44's thicker chamber walls in the mid-frame cylinder than my .45 Colt mid-frame, I can exceed the .45 Colt limit on pressure/performance and have a pretty hot but lighter gun for packin'.

Hondo, I am going to slightly disagree :) . Pushing a 240-250g at 1100 fps is about all I want to do in the flattop .44Spec. Although they say it will handle the Keith load up to 1200fps.... But I can reach 1100fps in the .45 Colt flattop with a 250-280g bullet too. (reference the Brian Pearce article above table II ). To me they are 'comparable', but the .45 has the edge with the added diameter and a bit more 'weight'. Anything above this an I'll go to the .44magnum and large frame .45 Colt.... But... I don't need those type loads, so the flattops .44spec and .45Colt meet my needs perfectly!

Buffalo Bore has a 225 gr .45LC that does 1100+ fps and is said to be safe in all .45's...

(Love to know what powder it's powered by...)

Just sayin'.... 8)

I can exceed that with my .44Spl with an equivalent safety margin.
Yes ... but remember you can do 'same' with less pressure with a .45 Colt... Sort of 'evens out'! :) .
