I was having my Friday coffee with my friend this morninginging when a gent stopped and complimented my hat, a Wrangle straw (so I thought) hat. He asked me what brand it might be. I told him it was a Wrangler brand.

Well, he went on to tell me he had retired from Resistol Hats in Garland, Texas, and always admired western hats. He then proceeded to tell me a bit about my hat, to my pleasure.

My hat was not made of straw, he said, but of paper spun in Japan and coated with polyester. The spun material is then woven by hand, starting from the top of the crown to the edge of the brim. The company found that such material is waterproof, whereas real was not. (Well I knew that!)

The old gent had retired from Resistol and moved to Memphis. He and his wife now sell flavored pre-popped popcorn.

I still have one straw hat I recall buying in 1984. 35 years ago!

I have a "pith helmet" style hat made by that method. The headband keeps it off my head, allowing air flow, and it's tough enough to keep me from bonking my head when I mow under my pine tree. I lost it for a couple of months, found it behind some bushes in back of my garden shed. Termites had eaten part of the brim. I patched it with paper mache and coated it with spray lacquer. Still using it.

I've been to the Resistol Factory Store there in Garland. You can buy a hat and have it shaped anyway you like. I believe they offer tours, or did at one time anyway.

Have a "straw" hat given to me by CAT, as a promotional from the NASCAR CAT team. Tried to wear it a couple times but people tell me I look ridiculous in it so it just sits in the closet. Just wear ballcaps when I'm out in the sun since I lost my Navy issued Boonie hat.

There are few "foods" more nasty than pre popped popcorn.
My older brother used to eat that stuff all the time. I can't stomach it....and I do eat freshly popped popcorn but I will go hungry before trying to eat pre popped popcorn.

I prefer popped popcorn.
If you buy pre popped it still needs to be popped.
