Students refuse to learn. Do not see the need.

I recall schools AFRAID to give a student an F for fail and instead gave an L for 'learning in progress".
Left wing dumbing down of America.
Idiocracy, the movie. Life imitating art. Costco University Degrees.
Or maybe an H.G. Wells Time Machine scenario, where the illiterate Eloi roam the earth or at least America.

My daughter told me that she was working with a teacher who told the class that "hinder" meant "to make or manufacture." Why? Because it was one of the multiple choice options and she had no clue.

Supposedly college educated with a Master's Degree.
Reminds me of another bit of wisdom from my Dad; An educated fool is the biggest fool of all. I have seen that in several highly educated folks that didn’t have the common sense that God gave a billy goat.

"I learned a long time ago to never use cash at a drive through fast food place, cash caused to much confusion."

I too live in NC,, and I use cash almost ALL the time. I use my CC for automated gas purchases. But pretty much everything else,, I pay cash.
I run into workers who can't easily make change. ESPECIALLY if I give them an odd amount so that I'll receive back a simple bill or bills.
When that happens,, I politely tell them what my change will be.
OR,, if they screw it up, I then place the change on the counter,, then politely ask for a manager. I explain the the manager what the screw-up is.

Once, a few years back, I had a "person of color" who,, while in front of the manager,, tried to argue with me. The manager told her that I was correct,, and that I had given her an amount that would allow her to give me back a simple $5.00 bill. She tried to argue with the manager. He told her that he would handle this, and told her to go do something else. As she turned away,, I said,, (in a voice where she could clearly hear me,) "And some people feel they are worth more than minimum wage,, and they can't even make change. And YOU put them running a cash register!"

She turned around and started cussing me. The manager told her to go to the back. She argued with the manager. He finally got her to leave the front.
I told him I didn't want my order,, as I was now unsure of what I would receive & wanted a refund. He apologized & said he would prepare my meal himself. While I stood there,, I could see him fixing my meal. AND,, I saw the "Owned & Operated by" placard. On it was a phone number. I was calling them when he brought out my order.
I stood right there,,, and got a person at corporate,, and started telling them what had just happened. I informed them that I was going to consider legal action, and said that I know you have video cameras. I want that preserved for evidence. The manager was standing there listening. I told the corporate person the manager was right there. They asked to speak to the manager.
They talked, and he confirmed that the dispute was over how to make change, and how the employee had responded. When I got the phone back, I again asked about the video being preserved. I was assured it would be.
A few days later,, a regional manager called me & asked me if I could meet him at the restaurant. I did. He was nice, very apologetic, and said he had interviewed the employee, the manager, and the other employees. Plus, he had seen the video. He ASKED me,, politely,, what I thought he could do to make me happy.
I said; "Simple,, fire people who can't do basic math with THEIR money & the CUSTOMERS money. Then make sure you hire employees who do have those basic skills!"
He tried to say that they and every other fast food place had a problem getting people to work AND who had good skills.
I came back with; "Not ALL of the fast food places. Go to Chic-filet & study their business model. THEY hire polite, clean, intelligent workers, and they provide excellent service!"
He didn't have an answer for that.

But if we,, as consumers do NOT challenge or confront,, in a polite manner incompetence in any job,, we are guilty of condoning less than acceptable work.

You and I do not always agree but we are similar in many ways and this is one of them. It not only burns my buns when people can't do "reverse math" (which is just simple algebra) to make change but it confirms the shear idiocy that roams freely.

You'd think a normal person's reaction to getting an "odd" amount of payment might just be to investigate or be intrigued in a manner to cause more detailed study. In other words, you'd think the person would say "this is not the normal procedure, wonder why this is happening" then use deduction to see the truth ... you know, like normal people learn. Instead, they just argue. I generally just say "I gave you that specifically so I would get a SINGLE $X bill instead of a bunch of ones and coins as I already have too many ones and coins are tough to keep track of" ... or something like that.

They think we are wizards of black magic.

They are conditioned to think people are scamming them. Probably because they have already been scammed. They are leary of people giving them odd amounts.

As you alluded to, that fear should motivate them to learn their job better.

It is so rare now to have your change counted back to you that is surprising when it happens.

The really funny part is these same people are convinced we are stupid.

It is disgusting to purchase an ice cream--pay a bill at cafe, go to gtrocery store, and hand a person money and they look confused. Drive up window scenario--the bill is 6.78, you hand them 78 cents and a ten spot. 4 bucks back right??, gotta go get the manager to figure this out!!!! Pathetic at times, simple math is too tough.
The funny part of this is the opposite side of your coin. The older generation cannot figure out how to use Apple Pay on their phones. 😀

I paid for something at Wal Mart and used cash for the first time in a very long while. They are rounding up because of the penny situation.

I was just reading an article about a school district in Jefferson Township, NJ that is so proud of their achievements in education. They have approx, 2,700 students, rank around 237 in the state and 7000 in the country. Student to teacher ratio 11:01, with a 55% passing reading, and 35% passing math. Whoopie, let's all go celebrate; now, how bad are the rest?
New Jersey has some of the best public schools in the country. There are very few private schools in the state because the public schools are so good.

this school is in the 10 10% nationwide, with an amazing 11:01 teacher to student ratio and results of 55% passing reading, and 35% passing math; so, how bad are the rest :(

Here, let me fix that first paragraph for you:
The older generation (as you call us) don't give a toot about Apple Pay, nor is their whole life tied to their so-called "smart phone".....In fact, those are the very types of things that have resulted in the dumbing down of today's kids, which BTW is what prompted this very thread.....

There, feel free to carry on now....You are welcome.

I have a question about Apple pay. Can I use dried Apple slices or do they demand fresh Apples sliced at checkout? Are some varieties worth less or more than others? And how about Apple sauce, pie, dumplings, etc. And I really don't get the connection between Apples and phones. Is other fruit acceptable?

I purchased something at a large retailer and gave the cashier the exact change and a $100 bill. The item was something like $78.42 so I was due $22. I tried to tell her that she owed me $22 and she wanted to argue the amount. She ended up giving me my $100 back plus $78 of the original purchase and my item.
I figured if she was that stupid let the store figure it out.

Watermelon Gunny....

I get customers who tell me that they're looking for a fridge about "Twenty cubic square inches." Hmmm. . . . that's getting into some higher math.

When I point that they probably mean "cubic feet," they get indignant and ask "How am I supposed to know the difference?" Uhhhh . . .. pay attention in 6th grade arithmetic class.

Truth. Still, even they have dropped a little nationally. My Elementary School was in the country's top ten when I was there. Now somewhere around #27. My High School was actually #1 in the state back when, and high (can't remember ranking) nationally. Also dropped some. Top High School in the state is now around #41 nationally. All my youngsters were educated here as well. I think that it's more than the teachers' ability to impart knowledge. They impart the desire to THINK as well. To question, to find answers without worrying about how. Whatever the rankings, I am so very glad that mine were all raised and educated here (at least in my part of NJ. As in every state, there are "missed" sections.).

"I can't imagine New Jersey having good anything."

I have a good friend,, James,, and he's from New Jersey. He's a heck of a handgun hunter,, and has a LONG history of handgun kills. Including a Cape Buffalo. He is willing to drive almost an hour each way to just practice at a gun range.

Then,, there were "The Jersey Boys" aka; Frankie Vallie & the Four Seasons. Some of the best music you can listen to.

Yep,, there is some good in Jersey as there is everywhere.

I know a James from Jersey, from another forum long gone. We had great conversations.

I haven't heard that accent in a some time. He loves his hog hunting, and turkey, and whatever...as long as he is shooting a handgun.
