I received a replacement slide from Ruger last week, and while inspecting it I noticed the firing pin is noticeably longer than the older one. It's so much longer that pushing forward on the exposed rear of the firing pin without depressing the firing pin block allows the tip of the pin to slightly protrude through the firing pin hole on the breach face. This seems like a safety issue to me. I contacted Ruger and the technician I spoke with confirmed this to be abnormal, and sent me new slide. I received the new slide today and it's exactly the same. Anybody know what's going on?

Here is a picture pushing on the rear of the pin without depressing the firing pin block. The tip of the pin slightly protrudes through the hole (crappy photo):

I have two LC9s. There is an obvious difference between the two pin-wise but neither stick out as far as yours.

I just watched a video by Eric Galloway in which he said Ruger shortened the length of the firing pin return spring from the original length of 25mm to 20mm.

My LC9 looks identical to your new slide.
If i push the firing pin from the back without depressing the firing pin blocker the tip of the firing pin is just almost protruding through the hole.
Using my (former) machinist eyeball i estimate the tip of the firing is just about 5 ten thousands of an inch within the hole at that point.
So it could not pierce a primer until the FP blocker gets pushed no matter what happens.
It does not actually come through the hole until the firing pin blocker is depressed so i don't think it is a safety issue. (But I am NOT a gunsmith!)

My LC9 has 1500 rounds through it now without a hitch but i am interested to know what the variation is all about between your first slide and the replacement (which is similar to mine).

Edit: I should have added that my LC9 was bought in August 2012.

A comment and a question. The comment: I'm sure that shorting the FP spring from 25 to 20 was part of the old "light strike" issue. Shorting the spring allows more FP travel - less wire to compress. Question, did the new slide come as a complete assembly, sights, blocker, FP? What prompted your complaint that Ruger was willing to send a new slide? Thanks.

PS My slide, firing pin, nearly two years old is someplace between the two pictured.

Ruger sent me a completely assembled slide. I called Ruger to ask about my front sight which had shifted to the right slightly, and they offered to send the new slide with the pinned front sight as is now standard. They included a paid return envelope for me to send back my old slide.
