Wow! That is a story! That one would be hard to top. I am impressed!

He was something, alright....he was just as he was in his movies. I later kicked myself for not getting an autograph, but none of us thought to do so at the time.
The experience of hanging out with him was enough, I guess.

Not that I know of !! He had a large piece of water front property on the Newport Beach Harbor too when it was about $1000 a frontage foot.

The Wild Goose is still in Newport. It’s a charter boat now.

Shortly after Wayne’s death it was docked adjacent to the old ferry building in San Pedro. The entire crew at that time was one deck hand. Basically doing upkeep and security while living on the boat.

I was taking photos of the harbor when I found it tucked behind the terminal. Knowing who it had belonged to, I ask the hand if it was ok to take photos. He asked that I not but acknowledged that he couldn’t stop me.

I opted not to take photos.

A lot of things have changed. Another guy that I liked and had tremendous respect for was Lee Marvin. He was the real deal, nothing phony about him. You could hear his voice blindfolded and you would know exactly who was talking.

I'm living in Iowa near his birthplace. Read an article that he was offered the lead on Lonesome Dove. He turned it down. Love the Duke and his movies,he had his iconic acting but I don't think it would have worked in Lonsome Dove. At least now being movie was epic, I tried to imagine him as Gus.....

I also read (on You Tube) that the Duke turned down the Black Bart role in Blazing Saddles. Can't Imagine him doing the Gene Wilder Schtick.

#20. I learned to wear the crystal toward the inside because I worked in a machine shop. If worn on the outside it was susceptible to being scratched or broken. Once I was promoted to management I wore the crystal out.

Another thing I learned was to never wear a watch or a ring when running a machine. The guy next to me once forgot to remove his wedding band. We were both running Bullard VTL’s. His wedding band was caught by a spinning fixture clamp and his left ring finger was popped off in an instant. A couple of us had the task of digging through the chips in his machine to recover his finger and his newly elongated wedding band. Back then there was no chance of reattaching a finger so he never had the opportunity to make that mistake a second time.

When I was in grade school, an "old guy" in my neighborhood had been a pilot in both world wars so he was super cool. He wore his watch crystal in, so I adopted that as well.

I later discovered that it is easier to check the time while driving with the face in and the added benefit of protecting the crystal.

Never really thought much about why cowboys wore those leather wrist cuffs. Seeing that statue made me think about the answer. He's wearing one only on his gun hand. It's keeping any excess shirt material from getting caught on the guns hammer.

Any other opinions?

I have rotated my watch inboard as needed, like driving, but with a spiedel the crystal can be flipped up against the skin, i was told by a tunnelrat that they did that to keep the vc from seeing the .glow

Always wore my watch with the crystal inside. Dunno why, just seemed more natural. On the day I retired I came home, took off my watch, and haven't worn it since. Not sure where it is and don't care.

Its a round copper wire made, and given him, in memory of somebody he thought important enough to him to wear everywhere after that. Dont recall maker, giver, nor whom memorialised.
Is very old british word.

Reportedly given to him by some Vietnamese. Other reports say it was given to him by Hopi Indians. Either way, it meant something to him so he wore it a lot.

I googol'd john wayne statue john wayne airpirt, cicked on the 'pictures' clicky and there they are. At least one close enough on the right side for clarity. Good pics, good resolution. Not a cuff, his shirtcuffs are rolled up, nothing to protect.

The j.w. memorial myseum in winterset iowa has a similar statue, standing vs walking, same bracelet.
Zoom in on some of the good pics out there and you can see daylight between wrist and band, and a gap at the inside wrist.

There is a similar calotype/sepia poster of him of him with some silly leather wristband, and his sleeves rolled up, but that 3" strip of leather isnt a regular western leather cuff; i saw watchbands like that back in the day. Made a few, myself.

I zoomed the heck out of that photo, and I'm now of the opinion that he's wearing a single, simple "ring bracelet" perhaps 1/4" to 3/8" in diameter . . . not any kind of "cuff". He wore similar things in most of his later movies. I have no idea of any background on this, but that seems to be what we see here . . . JMHO. YMMV
