Did you ever consider an Alaskan cruise?

I enjoyed river cruising, and my Alaska cruise was good as well. But what I really would like to try is a luxury cruise, with a company like Regency or Seabourn. But with cost at about $12,000 a person for a 10 day cruise, I am not ready to send a deposit.

Whenever I go outside (that’s what Alaskans call anywhere outside of Alaska) people ask me about taking a cruise to Alaska. I was watching YouTube and watched a video called

It’s actually pretty good. And no, it’s not a once in a lifetime thing. You will want to do it again.

Funny you ask! We just returned from an Alaska cruise last week.

When we took our first cruise (in the Caribbean) we booked our second cruise while still onboard. We always took destination vacations - get a hotel, rent a car, etc. For us there can be no better vacation than on a ship. Princess, to be specific.

This time was our 16th cruise. Again, while onboard we changed next year's cruise from the Caribbean to a second trip to Alaska.

Closest we came to a cruise was an all night cruise on the bay of Izmir, basically a big party/banquet. We did take a 10 day tour of Israel with a church group back in early '74 when I was stationed in Turkey. Lot of time on a bus and in hotels.

Reminds me of a story a guy I worked with told. Seems he was in the Army in the late 50s and his unit was being transported to Alaska in late fall early winter aboard the last "troop ship". There were 55 gallon drums situated around the deck to puke in because the sea was rough. The drums were on deck because the Navy didn't want any soldiers to fall overboard while puking. It wasn't long before the drums were full and sloshing out which made the matters worse. One GI ran to the rail to "toss his cookies", an "old salt" Army NCO says to the GI, "what's the matter boy, got a weak stomach?" To which the GI says, "No Sargent, I can puke as far as anyone here."

I had absolutely no desire to ever go on a cruise for just about every reason mentioned here. Last August my wife got me to go on an Alaskan cruise and it was one of the best experiences in my life. All of my negative perceptions proved false.

A long time ago the wife and I ran an AOL based Travel Agency. Being CLIA and CLEO certified we got invited to cruise complementary as long as we agreed to perform and report on certain inspections.

Yes every staff member knew that we were comped and why we were there. So every day our cabin had new sheets and was totally disinfected. No other passenger that we had booked got such treatment regardless of the level they paid for on their cruise.

So I come by my cynicism from past experience.

No, not even a Disney Cruise other than The Jungle Cruise interests me.

Oh, it gets even better. Turned down the appointments to all the Academies because no one was stupid enough to go there during Nam. But how many changes have you made to your career paths since the 60's? Had to learn from mistakes I made, but life wasn't boring.

Earned my Last Major in Adult Education and taught at the local College until I determined that I liked other people's children even less than I like my own. ( Guess a "Bachelor's Adult Education" officially makes me BAD? Probably should have got a Masters then I could be MAD. )

It's only been recently that I've been tossed some serious curves. We made our last five year plan, I purchased a new 4WD Escape so that she would have it when she took over the Commissary in Germany and I was going to collect SS and spend my time in the beer gardens.

Then the shoe fell, she had the massive stroke, the Neurosurgeon at NAS granted me the extra expensive test that would make no difference in his treatment plan. Like many of her family before her she had CADASIL.

If you don’t want kids take an adult cruse, if kids don’t bother you do Disney. You can find prices all over the place. Price seems to depend on size or brand. Most people spend very little time in their room other than sleeping so inside passage is cheapest. I like the sea air and hearing the water going by so get a room with a balcony. I have had all leverls of rooms and just like the balcony best for the money and what I like. It cost $2000-$4000 for the wife and I on must cruis we go on. That is airline and cruise. We don’t spend for food when in port as the food is, for our cruise ships, better than the port food.

You are right about the food, in Skagway we stopped at a local eatery. They had buffaloburgers made with "buffalo" meat. Liking buffalo, I ordered one, the meat was, I believe, part of an old wallet.
