Interesting. However,, I doubt a prototype. I think counterfeit. Look at the head of the eagle, as well as the neck.
There have been counterfeits made of several, and with the right type of machine, many look almost perfect. I good friend of mine, his wife, had a machine to do patches. Very interesting to watch her turn out a few things.
But,, if your source is solid,,, then, DRATS,, I have another one to hunt for.
(I'll watch my mail!)

There's also one of the same design made in the 1980's sometime (in the Phillipines) which is something like a 10" or 12" in diameter.

Actually I have seen two variations of the 12" counterfeit myself. I own one,, and there is a slight variation of that patch too. I have a picture of the two of them somewhere,,,,!

Remembering that a computer-controlled embroidery serger can be found second-hand for a few hundred bucks - I wonder why anyone but the most serious collector with the most legitimated source materials would pay more than pocket change for patches?

I recall when Sams Clubs had embroidering kiosks. The one nearest my home would make up patches and copy logos, etc for cheap. I had a few made for resorts and restaurants I worked with. You needed to include the trademark symbol if trademarked, and the disclaimer that you were'nt making them for resale, etc.

There may be many, many "counterfeit" versions out there.
