A friend left the State and left a H-K here with a friend. The friend wants to transfer it to me but I don't know how that can be done or what is needed. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Does your state still allow private sales? If so a simple bill of sale will handle it.
If a FFL transfer is needed, assuming you have a LGS that you use regularly I’m pretty sure that your friend could send a copy of his ID to the dealer, the dealer can then log the gun into his acquisitions, actually taking possession of the pistol, then have you do the paperwork and get your approval. Should be pretty simple.

When your friend that left the state , and gave the gun to your other friend .
Did they do a transfer when it changed hands ?
If not , who's to say who it was given too.
I don't know the laws where you are .
Out here , as long as you are not giving or selling it to a prohibited possessor , it is no different than giving or selling them a lawnmower.

Thinking that's a MD question.

Here, we move, give, sell guns as we please. Not bragging, but just to show how many here may not understand your situation.

But be warned, HK rifles eat a lot.

I suspect that MD has plenty of regulatory hoops you’re supposed to jump through. Just a guess on my part.
Yep:
From the article linked above:

Private gun sales are permitted in Maryland, but with important requirements. All private transfers must go through a licensed FFL dealer for a full background check. Direct person-to-person transfers without a dealer are not legal in Maryland. See Md. Code, Pub. Safety § 5-101 et seq.; Md. Code, Crim. Law § 4-301 et seq..

Additionally, if the firearm was left in the control of someone other than the original, registered owner without a background check and documentation by a ffl, that may have been a violation of MD law as well. I’d give careful consideration to whether l want to get involved with this deal. YMMV.
