a number of years ago, I helped a guy I used to work for, estimate the values of a bunch of firearms he acquired over the years, (mostly buying from the widows of friends who had passed). There wasn't much that really stood out.. the usual well worn 870 shotguns bunch of beat 94's (no pre-64's, along with a lot of other very generic stuff...) There were some handguns and I saw a cased Springfield XDM in 9mm.. nice hard case, extra mags and kydex holster and mag pouch (eww).... I asked him if he'd take $300, and he said "sure". I didn't have the cash but I told him I'd transfer it into his account next paycheck...
He marked the case with a tag "springfield 9mm", and put it back in a vault..
Well.... it was about the time he and his wife flew south for the winter. I couldn't get the gun picked up before they headed out.. By that time I was at the homestead for the winter. I was going to have a friend get it and I'd go in and pick it up once the freeze up came..
Well.. that didn't happen... the next summer was my first full summer at the cabin, instead of going to town. I couldn't convince anyone to go pick it up... by the time I did a year and a half had flown by.. I finally got into town that january and picked up the gun, along with, all the other supplies I haul up... I was so looking forward to opening that case, but I held off until I had everything I brought up to the cabin stashed away..
I popped my self a beer.. (please withhold comments on this.. I'm a grown boy and I can handle beer while examining my firearm). sat down in my chair..... opened the case.... to find this!!! It was a Springfield 9mm alright! But it was the wrong one... this was the 1911 "range officer".. I looked up the price and it was worth a fair bit more than the XDM...
I called the guy I bought it from, but in that year and a half, he had sold the gun I bought.. plus.. he was in the lower 48 until summer. He told me I could just keep it.. (I really didn't want it....) but watcha gonna do..
I told him what it was (probably) worth... and said it was okay... I had earned it.. I didn't charge him for helping him with the sale guns...
So now it looks like I have to cut a bit of the leg off my kitchen table....
Eventually, I did pick up an XDM and an XD-s, in 45acp.... $500 for the both.. so I didn't come out to bad.... and the 1911... even tho I really don't have a use for it... it's dern pretty...
wanna hear some other Alaska gun tales?.... it's not the only one....

When we go to the range (40 acres of hay pasture with a cranberry swamp in the middle) with all the extended family, most folks are drawn to my 1911 rather than the fantastic plastics that share the table. There is just something about the 1911 that captures imaginations. Everybody should have at least one.

I like 1911's!!... I own.. umm... 4?..... I'm gonna have to go look... 🤪 I do really like the striker fired guns for carry tho... barring that I'll carry one of my DA Smiths or my Witness 45.....(it's kinda big tho)
The XD's really fit my hand nice (with the flat backstrap), and are the most naturally pointing handguns I own.... I don't even have to try and get the sights in alignment. The XD-s is a single stacker and is really skinny. 7+1, but has a flush mag that is 6+1, in case I need to be really sneaky....

Well I'll comment anyway......as long as it wasn't a light beer you are OK....a pour of bourbon would have been better. I thought it was normal to enjoy a drink and admire newly acquired firearms.

and the 1911... even tho I really don't have a use for it.

.......who doesn't have a use for a 1911? Everyone should have at least one....or five.....or.....

I bought the wrong gun once. A neighbor told me a guy at work was selling a Colt 45. He only wanted $50. I couldn’t open my wallet fast enough. It took a couple weeks to complete the transaction. When he finally brought it too me I opened the box expecting a beat up 1911. To my surprise there sat a 1900 vintage Colt 45... SAA. 😃

Same sort of thing happened to me here... member here was trying to clear out some of their recently deceased partners guns and I said I would buy one... when it came to my FFL it was not the gun I bought... FFL said don't do the paper work call them and see what gives... seems there was a mix up and the one I wanted had gone to someone else. We decided to do the same thing... me keep this one which was worth more than the one I was going to buy. The cool thing is I then realized this handgun was actually made here in S.C. The other interesting thing is it is the most accurate semi-auto pistol I have excluding the Sig P320 compact with the Romeo red dot sites...

A friend's dad passed, and she and her mom found a "Winchester 270" in the back of his closet.
Didn't I want that rifle? "ABSOLUTELY!" (I bought most of Loyd's tools, and his fishing tackle.)

With visions of pre-'64 Model 70s dancing in my head, I headed over with a pocket full of cash.

When I got there, I found a Winchester Model 270, a pump .22!

I'll give the ladies credit- they ID'd the rifle correctly! It was me who jumped the gun (so to speak! 🤪), imagining my new prize.

I love .22s, and I like most of the pump .22s, but this one just wasn't speaking to me.

About that time, one of Loyd's nephews materialized, and said he'd like to have Uncle Loyd's rifle. Perfect! (y)

I didn't feel obligated to buy a rifle I didn't want... PLUS I looked like a gentleman for backing out gracefully.

Of course, in the years since... I've (kind of) developed an appreciation for the Model 270. Go figure!

Sounds like it took him a couple weeks to figure out how to steal it so he could sell it......;)

Please explain what that has do with your gun story.
it's a reference to putting a book or something under a short table leg to stop it from teetering.... but since my table legs are fine... I'll have to cut a bit off to put the pistol case under..... maybe it's a 60's minnesota thing...

I'm a whiskey, bourbon guy.... but I usually have a few beers sent up just to switch things up a bit... I like to pour a bit of the hard stuff in my beer (boilermaker)....
and I am actually considering putting toether a commander length 1911 together this winter... life is full of contradictions.....

I have heard the 'table leg' thing before but just could not reference it...
I was thinking it had to do with a guy saying he was so short on money he had to cut the legs of the kitchen table down.
Nothing goes in my bourbon but some ice..... and my beer of choice is often close to room temperature.

Nothing wrong with a large rock or a couple small rocks in bourbon unless it's top shelf. You don't want it watered down. I keep the good stuff for company or a really good cigar, or both. Never iced or watered. However, especially on a hot/humid night on the deck I will pour a few of my "daily" with a ball of ice. Usually Wild Turkey 101 or 101 Rye. 🥃

Ice cold Miller High Life is good enough for me as a norm. Unless at a crab feast or rockfish party. Then it's ice cold Natty Boh. On a cold winter day it's Guinness or Carltons at "cellar temp" along with a hearty venison or beef stew is my favorite.

No, Bob was one of those that worked at his own pace. If there was a fire in the kitchen and the fire extinguisher was in the hall leading to the kitchen half the house would be in flames before he returned with it.

There's no such thing as a good cigar. Sorry to be the bearer of factual bad news. Ok, not really sorry. No such thing.

Seems there are millions of folks that disagree with you. Myself and many of my close friends amongst them. Give me a heavy dark peppery maduro wrap paired with a good Rye and I'm in heaven. That is my factual good news and I'm happy to be the bearer of that ;)

Oh, I know there are millions who think that way, but enjoying, how is impossible to fathom, doesn't make it good. Still isn't good. Millions of people enjoy all sorts of things but those things aren't good either. Just enjoyed somehow. And I'm all for them provided I don't have to be within 100 feet of the enclosure used or 25 feet of any of the people afterward.

Two tears in a big bucket. ;)

Your terms are acceptable. Adios.

I, too, like a great cigar, but I like mine best with a good cognac or a port (Better yet, dunk the cigar in the cognac before lighting up.) Unfortunately, I don't do this often...my bride HATES the smell of cigars.

In the late 1980s, while working out of town in Chicago (every week, Monday through Friday, for three years), my partner (from Bilbao, Spain) would bring fine Cuban cigars that he - as a foreigner - was permitted to bring through customs. We'd do the Cognac/Cuban thing a couple of times every week on the outdoor patio of our favorite bar. He gave me a full box of Cubans as my going-away present.

Before my dad died, he lived alone for 25 years (after my mom died). He loved to sit on his easy chair in the den and smoke cigars while watching baseball games on TV. I went there frequently, and once smoked one of his cigars. Ugggghhhh...he bought the cheapest ones he could find (El Turdo, I think), and their "flavor" was just wrong.

So I would bring my own when I visited (most often a Macanudo). I once gave him one. He smoked it and then prounounced, "I don't see much difference between yours and mine." Thereafter, I didn't share my smokes with him.

That was one of my life's great joys...sharing cigars with my dad and talking baseball.

my bride HATES the smell of cigars.
So she has properly functioning olfactory senses. And cigars don't have a smell. They and their smokers have a stench. And that's being generous. And why I won't be within 25 feet or in the same room after. My cousin's former husband smoked cigars now and then. Don't know why she was that stupid or took as long as she did to wise up.

My Gawd man!....who hurt you with a cigar? The way you relentlessly rant over them you must have got the "Lewinsky" experience bent over a standing ash tray against your will at some point and time in your life or subjected to someone chain smoking raunchy gas station stuff.

I absolutely enjoy walking into a well maintained humidor in a smoke shop. I get it to a point. Nobody enjoys the aftermath of chain smokers or overflowing ash trays. Myself I don't enjoy smokey bars or rooms. Never subject myself to them. My EX-wife started smoking after she split. Became a chain smoker. When my Daughters arrived for summer visitation the first thing I did when we got home from the airport was put them in clean clothes and put everything in their suitcases in the wash.

I get it. But not all folks that enjoy a nice cigar, and a pour of bourbon with friends around a fire or on a back deck on a nice evening are not raunchy types with a stench......sheesh.

well.... to steer this thing back on track.....;):ROFLMAO:
here is another "wrong gun"... or more accurately, "wrong caliber"? gun.....
I was once again helping that same person/friend calculate prices to help the widow of a friend who passed away suddenly. This time I was at the homestead... There were about 17 guns... not many... again, most were just guns you could find anywhere.. many in in what I call "Alaska grade".... (well used and minimal maintenance). There was one gun tho that piqued my interest. A Thompson Contender with a 7mmm TCU 14 inch barrel.....
This was a caliber I was familiar with. I had a friend who had a mini 14, that had the 7mm replacement barrel emplaced so he could use it for deer hunting. He let me borrow it, and I reloaded for it... I hated giving it back....
anywhoo....
We cut a decent deal, and I made arrangements to have it sent up on the next freight run... Well............ it arrived and as the neighbor who calls my cr*p up in the summer months were talking guns.. (it's that or firewood).... I unwrapped the contender and broke open the action...
I didn't have my glasses on... but it looked funny.... it appeared to have a rimmed chamber.. and it looked to large. The barrel was plainly markd 7mm TCU....
I went in the house... got my glasses and a 30/30 round. I placed the rim into the chamber... and it fit.. hmmmmm.....
No other markings on the barrel other than factory... soooo.... I'm guessing the most logical answer is that it was chambered for 7/30 waters. I can't be sure without checking. Now I'm also concerned about the quality of the chambering job... The rim depth looks correct, but I'm gonna hafta do a deeper dive.... nuttin's easy... as my pop would say.....
and..... that's not the last "wrong" gun I've purchased!!!🙄
