Welcome to the Forum!
The more details we can get, the more help we can be. Pics, and a detailed description help a bunch. What more does he want to know? Does it have ANY odd markings anywhere?

Yep, Ruger standard auto RST4. Almost always referred to (incorrectly) as a MKI, or "pre MKI". They were made concurrently with the MKI, and are essentially the same gun. The difference was that the standard was only available with a 4" or 6" tapered barrel and fixed sights. A MKI will have adjustable target sights, and heavy tapered, or bull barrel of various lengths.

The MK-I barrel lengths are "T678", 6 7/8 in. heavy tapered bl., started at serial number 15000 which would make it a RED EAGLE. then there was a "T514", with a 5 1/4 in. heavy tapered bl. started with serial number 265XX. Not many made, only about 3500. Then there was the "T512", 5 1/2 in Bull Barrel. started general production around 3074xx. For the MK-I these three were the only barrel lengths offered.

The Mark I will also be rollmarked "MARK I" on the left side of the receiver.

I just picked up a Ruger Standard last night.
Blued, fixed sights, looks like a 5/5" or 6" ( have not measured it) heavy tapered barrel in about 90% condition. The slightest bluing wear at one side of the muzzle and with the original mag. $175 SN 17-155xx which if I read it right is a 1981 gun.

They just feel good in the hand and I did not need it but I did it anyway.

If it's a heavy tapered barrel then it's a Mark-I. If it's a Standard then it's a 4 3/4 or 6 in. barrel. Do as wwb stated above! Look on the left side of the receiver and it will say.
