I'm alive

By the great grace of the good God I am alive although right now the alternative would almost seem better. I decided to go the range Jan 2, and I was driving up the road I had to pass a slow moving dump truck. When I was in the next lane almost alongside him he turned right in front of me. I thought I was a dead man for sure. We collided and my very choice F150 is now total junk. I'm not a hell of a lot better. It took a large iron bar to pry the door open and I'm not ashamed to admit I screamed like a mad man when they pulled me out. At the moment of impact I thought I was surely a dead mad. First the air bags did not deploy. Thanks Mr. Ford. Also the seat belt did not lock up fast enough so I made a fast acquaintance with the steering wheel. Long story short the paramedics did what they could and off to Tucson to the hospital and the ER. CT scans, x-rays and an ultrasound and then up to a room. Turns out I have a fractured sternum and guys, that ain't fun. About noon Jan 3 they sent me home. I don't think I'll be doing much on the computer for a while although I'll try if I have a good day. The cops took my guns and my stepdaughter had to go get them. They didn't want let her have then so she called her lawyer. She has the guns and just has to bring them over to my place. I don't now what's so great about Percocet, it's not doing a damn thing. Just a heads up on why I may be scarce at times. The night of Jan 3 when I went to bed it hurt so bad I couldn't breathe. A bit better sitting up so I got dressed and back to the ER. Part of the problem was the Percocet. My body just didn't like that stuff and frankly, neither did I.

Good luck on your recovery. Funny thing was when my sternum was cracked open, ibuprofen or naproxen worked better than the opioids for pain relief. And didn’t knock me out.

Hang in there. Glad to hear it wasn't worse. Having had a similar situation in the early 80s I can feel your pain. Once out of the hospital I laid on the sofa. . .then couldn't get up. My wife had to help me sit up straight. Ibuprofen worked as we as anything else.

Glad you are alive! My brother had a truck totaled out the same way, but it was at slow speed so he wasn't hurt.

I have been on a roller coaster with pain meds, too, after removal of a pituitary tumor. They gave me oxycodone and all it did was make me vomit so much I had to go back to the hospital, too.

Tylenol didn't work, either, for my headaches, and I avoid iburprofen, naproxen and all other NSAIDs because they attack my stomach terribly and - again - I end up in the hospital.

Last trip to the emergency dept. they gave me morphine. It took away the pain for about 1 hour and made me so anxious I couldn't even lay down, and then it made me sick, too, so I was back to vomiting.

Then the Dr. gave me intravenous toradol (ketororlac), which is a real strong NSAID but since it wouldn't be going into my stomach the Doc gave it a try. What a relief. No side effects for me, dulled the pain enough so I could sleep for a couple hours, etc.

If you don't have stomach issues like mine, maybe you could ask your Dr. about ketorolac for your pain. It's all my dental surgeon friend gives his patients anymore.

I feel for you !! Last year I passed a kidney stone.... hurt so ad I thought I was dying. Country doctor was bed, in the next town over. The nurse could do nothing but tell me to shut up.....one nurse that will never get a christmas card from me!

A full and speedy recovery and I hope you get a good settlement from the idiot who hit you.
I was hit by a drunk while riding my bicycle 4 years ago, they gave me a Percocet at the hospital and a prescription-didn't bother getting it filled.
One interesting thing. I submitted the bill to my insurance through work and my car insurer. I received a phone call from the hospital's lawyer about the bill, as soon as I told him I was an accident victim he asked where the report was filed-I've heard nothing from then since. Someone told the practice here in NJ is the bad guy has to foot the bill.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck. I hope you get to feeling better soon. It sounds like rest is what you need so do it.

A given type pain med will work wonders for one person and be useless for another. Call and tell you Doc this one is not working and you need a different type fast. Oxy works for me but hydro does nothing. Just the opposite for my wife.

Curses Red Baron!!! You coulda been killed!!! If you can take Ibuprofen 800 mg every 8 hours works wonders! Take 5 deep breaths every hour while awake to prevent the pneumonia you will get if you don’t!!! Prayers sent! Good luck.

Glad you made it and yes the pain is not fun... often the pain meds they give don't work... I have a friend who fell and ripped his knee apart and the meds they gave him did not work ... so he called and asked for something else... i went by the docs office and got the prescription and was on the way to the RX when he called and asked me to read what it was... they had written a perscription for the same exact stuff... he had even told them in the ER that that would not work on him for pain....

hang in there... it will get better.

Got here late so I'll say an extra prayer. Tell your doc the meds are not doing it!
Need something stronger. Take care and get well soon. ps

Terrible way to make scrap iron out a favorite pick-up!! From the sound of things you will heal just gonna be rough getting there. Know what ya mean about that Percocet, and its predecessor, Percodan, was even worse. I refused to take it after 3 nights. Hang on Paul, you'll make it!
