I am a bit confused. Are you asking about a carry permit or a purchase permit? Here in Maryland my carry permit took about two weeks to process. If I am purchasing I have to complete a State Police questionnaire (a State equivalent of a 4473). I am given a PIN and give it to the dealer. Then it is a 7 day wait, for a reply from the State Police saying that I can pick up the gun.

Well then I stand up corrected.... never heard of such a thing... well actually I have, it seems they used to have that up in N.C. for many years... all falls back on the Jim Crowe years when a person had to get permission from the local sheriff to purchase a gun.... but then gun control has been racist pretty much for the whole time this country has existed..

the irony for me is I have one of those and is the only way I can buy a gun from an FFL here in S.C.

The OP is referring to purchase permits for regulated firearms. Or at least I say so because when I stated that in a reply he "liked" it. It sounded like VA's process years back when I was stationed there.

Maryland used to have a M77R form for regulated firearms. Now that they have the HQL and HCL and H this and that I have no idea what Maryland does. Glad I moved over to the PA side and don't have to worry about all that nonsense.

In OR it used to be that if you had a CHL it was cash and carry. Then they changed that so you had to go through the state for a background check. With a CHL that was just about instantaneous, without it anywhere from a minute or two to a couple of hours. Now the darn Dem’s are trying to institute a permit to purchase and a 72 hr waiting period. That’s still going through legal challenges… but the panic it caused has had wait times on a background check go to anywhere from pretty quick to a month or so. Luckily with my CHL it has sailed through almost immediately most times.

In Oregon -- because they're trying to push through the permit system and a 72 hour waiting period, and they've got a super-majority in the state capitol -- so only the lack of a quorum can stop it, some gun stores have gone out of business and others aren't even taking consignments now. It will probably pass and there will be lawsuits -- but it needs to go all the way to the Supreme Court because they'll never stop until nobody in Oregon can buy or sell a gun!

After reading through this thread, I think some are getting confused between a concealed carry permit and a state permit to purchase a firearm. After re-reading it, I'm not entirely positive which he was talking about. Anyway, if it was regarding a carry permit, there's this. Missouri does not require a permit or license to purchase a firearm. Missouri does not have a permit-to-purchase law, meaning anyone 18 years or older (or 21 for handguns) can purchase a firearm without a license. There is also no waiting period or firearm registration requirement.

However, from what I saw, it looks like MT does not have a state sales tax unless it was recently enacted. If they do have a state sales tax then yes GunBroker would collect it.

How long do you have to wait for your handgun permits to go through? Here in NJ, one permit covers all longarms, but each handgun requires a permit unto itself. While the permits go through the state police, the towns get them from there. Doesn't matter if the application is online or not. My son's town has a dedicated firearms officer / department, and his take around 2 weeks. My down doesn't. Someone will get around to doing one or two if they have nothing else to do. Usually takes around TWELVE weeks. At this point I apply for 2 or 3 at a time. If I don't use them I can extend for 90 days after the original 90 days. Still, this strikes me as a ridiculous way to have to do it. What are YOUR wait times?

If you mean a permit to BUY a firearm?
Arizona doesn't do that....

You need to work to make your state a free state.

Maybe the entire community needs to order 3 at a time and overwhelm the system. I hate bureaucracy.

I am not ORDERING 3 at a time, just applying for 3 permits at a time. I only want one pistol right now, but If I decide to buy another I would have to wait forever once again. So it's a just in case....

I was actually just talking about permit to purchase. A CCW is a whole other can of worms. Once you pass a proficiency test, it's $400, another long wait, and has to be renewed from the start point every 2 years.

But as of a year or two ago, there is a 72 hour "cooling off" period for all firearm purchases. I have a FFL so that doesn't impact me on the acquisition side, but I have to enforce it on local sales. And it doesn't matter if the buyer already owns guns. I don't make many in-state sales since my gun biz is mostly a hobby and most of my sales involve shipping out of state to forum folks. But I have had to explain to the 70-year-old farmer down the road who likes to tinker with old military rifles that in spite of passing the NICS check and already having waited two weeks for his payment to reach the seller and for the seller to ship the gun to me, he can't take his 8mm Mauser that he bought off GunBroker home with him today, and to come back in 3 days after the state determines that adding another bolt action rifle to the fairly large collection he has assembled over the prior 50 years probably won't pose a threat to himself or anyone around him.

I'm guessing that the OP was asking about Handgun Purchase Permit, which is different than the ATF Form 4473. Having lived in NJ, VA, TX, AZ, and PA, New Jersey was the only state, where I lived, that required this. You still needed to do a 4473. All the rest were either hand-to-hand (no form required), or buy from dealer. AND NJ required you to have an ammunition permit as well. SMDH

Here in NY I started the hobby in 1971 and it took a year. That 's for the "permit". Lots of paperwork. After the initial paperwork, registering a new gun is simple.

My wife and son started in the early 2000's and it took 3 months and 2 weeks, respectively. But we had moved to a nicer county.

Now, if I go to my LGS when they open at 9AM and make a deal quickly, I can drive a mile to the PP office, get it registered in 10 minutes and be back to the LGS in a half hour. By 11AM I will be home cleaning and oiling my new purchase, and be at the range right after lunch.

No matter if I buy one, or a dozen at the same time. No waiting period. My wife and I dual register (so if I die she can be happy.....LOL), and since I have her POA, I can register it on her permit without having to bother her to go with me.

A few hoops, and of course I can only use 10 round mags, but I shoot every week. Life is good.

I have to say in reading GypsmJim's post above we sure live in one more strange and hypocritical country... to do what he just described above. I have to drive to my FFL which is about 10 minutes away... they don't open until 10:00 walk in pick out what I want, fill out the 4473 form, they put my SC Concealed Weapons Permit number on the form... I pay them what they ask and walk out with the gun. Now I did have to take an 8 hour class 20+ years ago, take a test, and then go to a range and put 50 rounds through a silhouetted target at from 10 to 25 feet and fill out a form and also submit finger prints to get the permit which they then do another deep check on me every 5 years. So that liberty is to a degree debatable.

If there are no state sales taxes in your state , then gun broker does not tax you.

I’m glad to see nobody started to talk bad about New Jersey. It’s actually a very nice state. I lived there for 2 years and aside from the silly gun rules, I can’t complain. They are very polite drivers on the roads, unlike Dallas.

No need for a concealed carry permit either. I still got one though. Without a CC permit you have a 3 day waiting period on pistols. Here in my VERY LIBERAL part of the state (Gainesville) it is a 5 day wait.
Talk is that the state is moving towards open carry.

Buying gun in California 10 day waiting period . 11% sales tax in addition to state tax of 8 to 9 percent very by county maybe more in some. The 11% is also on ammo.

To get a carry permit . Fees may very by county but approx 250.00 to state county 300.00 to trainer . When i got mine 10 years ago took 8 months start to finish and reverts every 2 years could take 3 months. Now sheriff officer has it down to a day or two for recert don’t know time line for new permits. I think it depends on the Sheriff’s office.

Yes it sucks but at least you can get a carry permit. The state of California try’s to put every road block to gun ownership . Most Sheriffs offices are more gun friendly.

I take it you're talking PURCHASE PERMIT?
No purchase permit required in FL. There is a 3 day waiting period if you don't have a CCW permit.

Just renewed my Fl. CWP just so I don't have to wait 3 days to pick up a gun I purchased. Sure different than the State I left almost 9 yrs. ago.
