How Long Do YOU Have To Wait?

How long do you have to wait for your handgun permits to go through? Here in NJ, one permit covers all longarms, but each handgun requires a permit unto itself. While the permits go through the state police, the towns get them from there. Doesn't matter if the application is online or not. My son's town has a dedicated firearms officer / department, and his take around 2 weeks. My town doesn't. Someone will get around to doing one or two if they have nothing else to do. Usually takes around TWELVE weeks. At this point I apply for 2 or 3 at a time. If I don't use them I can extend for 90 days after the original 90 days. Still, this strikes me as a ridiculous way to have to do it. What are YOUR wait times?

the OP is actually asking about when you apply for a permit not when buying a handgun from an FFL. I think here in S.C. it was about 3 months.... not sure now that was 20 years ago.... it did take them about 3 months to get me my last renewal....then they sent me two with two different expiration dates....

No permits required in MS, nor does the State get any info from the gun shop about what you just walked out the door with. The State Police will be happy to sell you a carry permit, but they don't know anything about the gun(s) you have nor do they care.

Same here in Tishomingo County, and it was the same in Texas when I left....I hear-tell it's the same over in Alabama now days too....God Bless Dixie.

Permits? No such thing in PA thankfully. Walk in, fill out the forms. Forms are now computerized in my two favorite LGS's and very easy to complete within a couple minutes. Typically my background comes back under 30 seconds. Then I pay and out the door I go. From start of form to paying.....typically 10-15 minutes depending on time of day, how busy the staff is. So my "wait" depends on the LGS's staffing when I'm there.

Permit not required starting this year. I have a CCW permit anyway. When purchasing at a FFL they don’t have to run the FED background check either. (NICS)

Some states require folks to buy a permit prior to purchasing a regulated firearm. It was like that when I was stationed in VA......had to go to the courthouse, purchase the permit and then take that to the LGS to purchase the regulated firearm. Annoying and stupid.

To purchase a handgun in WI you fill out the paperwork, it is submitted, and usually within a few minutes you get the results of the background check and can walk out with it. If you are referring to a CC permit, send in your $50, proof of qualification, and wait about 10-14 days.

Zero... however, we do have an enhanced permit that you can obtain, which will give you carry rights in approximately 28-30 other states. I'm planning on getting that soon, so we'll see on that. I have a feeling it will be quick too, as it's issued by the same office that gives out driver's licenses, and to get my real ID DL when I moved into the state, it took about 20 minutes. Just got to take the one-day class first.

In the liberal state of Washington, no permit is required (YET), but there is a 10 business day wait before you can receive the gun.

Y'all are still not answering the OP's question... just because your state does not require a permit to carry a handgun does not mean they don't issue them... here in S.C. they still do.
This allows me to carry in some other states and on top of that go to an FFL and purchase a gun with out a back ground check, which is a good thing since I can't pass the one they have to use.

The OP is not talking about a carry permit. He is talking about a purchasing permit which you need for each regulated firearm.

Well then I stand up corrected.... never heard of such a thing... well actually I have, it seems they used to have that up in N.C. for many years... all falls back on the Jim Crowe years when a person had to get permission from the local sheriff to purchase a gun.... but then gun control has been racist pretty much for the whole time this country has existed..

No such thing here in Ohio. I walk in, pick out the gun I want. Then fill out the form, it’s usually electronic now. The response comes back within 5 minutes or so. Then I pay the cashier and walk out the door.

I guess a lot of us don’t know how good we have it.

Permits are not needed in Vt, however I'm curious how many times can you extend for 90 days? Until you decide to buy another pistol? can you keep a permit in limbo permanently?
