Anyone using Hodgdon Longshot powder in pistol loads? A friend gave me half a pound to try out. I see quite a bit of data for mid to heavy magnum revolver loads.
If you have loaded some, what are your thoughts on it.

My first try with it was in the 41 mag, fantastic is an understatement.
Showing good promise in the 45 colt and 327, the both need some cylinder work. I know it's not a powder issue.
Extreme spread in the 41 was 3fps out of 12 shots. Thought it was the chrono and ran 6 more over it, same results.

It's a good powder for most cartridges. But I find it likes to be loaded on the high side with heavy bullets for best performance. I keep a couple pounds around now for higher end (medium loads) loads.

Would Longshot be good for cast bullets in 45 Colt and 454 Casull?

Right now I use Unique, 2400, HS-6, H110 and IMR4227.
I'm always looking for another powder.

Check out Hodgdon's online data. It seems to like heavy bullets and mid to heavy loads is what I am seeing from the data.

Cast bullets are great with Longshot. In .45 Colt I've tested 250g RNFP, 285g SWC, 300g FN and 320g FN. The .454 I have no experience with, but suspect it would be just fine there too.

I will have to try some in my heavy Colt .45 loads! How does it compare to 2400?

Longshot is turning out to be one of my most used powders in several different handguns. Its very versatile, you can check out the burning rate in any of the reloading manuals. I'm using it in my 32 maggie, 327, 32/20, 40 caliber revolver, 44 special, 41 maggie, 45 Colt. I do use other powders in all those calibers but Longshot is very useful & has been easy to find in most stores, you'll like it.
