help with cyl to barrel clearance?

hi, is it safe to fire my 45colt vaquero with a .45acp cylinder that has zero gap between barrel & cylinder? also the front base pin bushing is .08 thousandths short of touching the frame. only ammo i'll use is jacketed ball ammo, no lead rounds. it took forever to find a cylinder for acp and i hope its safe to use! fred I thimk we got our cylinders from the same source. The boss on the front of the cylinder needs to be long enough with the cylinder moved aall the way forward that there is still a barrel cylinder gap. Im thinking of having a few thousands machined off the front of mr cylinder to accomplish that. my overall length of star to front boss is ok with no more play than my original cylinder.

toolman, this one is a blackhawk cyl. new model large frame, the one i got for the NEW vaquero fits like its factory! the blackhawk one drops in to the frame and spins fine with no drag, just no gap. i think it will work ok, want to know what others know that i don't know! before i shoot it!

Zero gap and the bushing isn't touching the frame in the front? I'd find another cylinder and part ways with that one.

bedrockfred, When you cock the revolver, is there cylinder fore and aft play? If, when pulling the cylinder to the rear, you can get a cylinder barrel gap of about .004" or more then your problem can be solved by by making and installing a shim to fit on the base pin 'bushing'. Cut out the shim from a feeler gauge.

If not then figure out the cylinder dimensions you need and try for a swap with another forum member.

If you have a drill press it is possible to mount the cylinder using a bolt and washers passing through the cylinder base pin hole. Use a good file and sanding paper to dress back the cylinder face then add that shim.
