My goal is to reduce weight on a new flat top convertable Blackhawk. It is stainless. My goal is to get this revolver as light as possible. I am considering swapping the steel grip frame for an aluminum one.

I have a couple of questions:

I see used aluminum grip frames for sale. Will any factory aluminum grip frame fit any steel Blackhawk? If not which grip frame should I look for?

How difficult is it to fit a grip frame?

How much weight do you think I will save by doing this swap?

Thanks,
Corbi

In general, an aluminum GF from a Blackhawk will fit the frame of a Blackhawk with the steel GF. Fitting is usually easy & most just bolt up. I'm not a NM expoert, but there are some of the newest models that the "ears" of the top of the GF might need slight modification. Screw pattern is the same though.

Corbi,

Contender is correct. Answers to your questions:
* All ruger SA grip frames with interchange from the standpoint of the screw pattern from single six to Super BH and from Old Model to New Model. See below for simple adaptions required for certain applications such as yours. You need # XR & L if you want a grip frame to fit your hammer spring and lock. Or #XRN-3RED to eliminate the lock and its extra weight; you'll need a standard hammer spring, strut and spring retainer, cheap parts. All your other grip parts can be used. You will need different grip panels as well.

* Fitting is simple but again different depending on application.

* Steel 6.5 oz., aluminum 2 oz., 4.5 oz savings.
Steel ejector rod housing 1.5 oz., alum .5 oz.
Lock weight .5 oz.

Here are the details to be aware of:

1. This is a photo of the ears around the base of the hammer that contender was referring to. They get taller as the frames get newer. Your FT BH will have the tallest ears so you'll need to order a new aluminum frame or find a used one as close to the vintage of your gun as possible to eliminate or minimize fitting. New aluminum grip frames come black powder coated and will fit good enough just as they come.

2. The alum grip frames have two projections just below the ears in the photo above that stick forward into recesses in the Main frame. Your FT BH does not have the recesses, therefore the projections must be filed way; a simple job. You'll notice a slight depression above the trig guard on the top left side of your grip frame that will need reproducing in the alum grip frame for the free spin pawl in your gun; but again another simple task.

3. Your grip frame is an XR3 size (the back of the trigger guard is 3/16" closer to the front grip strap than the aluminum. The aluminum and the same size steel grip frames (are the XR3-RED size) and have the benefit of less knuckle rapping under recoil. You should check out this site for a good explanation and illustrations of the different size grip frames:

4. For an aluminum frame of late vintage with tall ears, and without the internal lock, look for # XRN-3RED. With lock the # is XR & L.

5. Don't forget the ejector rod housing which is steel on your gun is also available in aluminum for additional weight savings. No fitting required.

6. Just to be aware: the flat top BH steel grip frame is 7/16" thick, all the aluminum frames are 1/2" thick but this does not affect the interchangeability, just the feel in your hand.

Do you plan to polish out the aluminum parts to match the SS or leave black?
Hope this helps. Just let me know if you have any questions or about parts, part #s, etc.

Thank you for the great information.

The grip frame I am looking at is from 1990 era. Do you think the ears will be tall enough or do I need to find a newer one. What is the ears are too low?

I plan on removing the black finish to match the stainless. Is there anything to be concerned about with the finish removal?

I think I'll enjoy the contour of the aluminum grip frame better. The grips not fitting is no big deal as I wanted wood instead of the fake ivory anyway. I also don't need a lock! Truthfully I don't think I will notice a 1/16" difference in the grip width. Possiby I could go with narrower grips if I do?

Thank you for the intell on the ejector rod housing. That sounds like a simple swap.

Hi Corbi,

I think the ears will be a little low. If they are too low it's not a big issue with a stainless gun because you won't have to re-blue; just file down the frame on either side of the hammer to fit the ears and repolish.

No concerns. To remove all the old anodized finish, Easy Off oven cleaner works best on the anodizing and is the easiest. You have to buy the "dangerous" oven cleaner, the kind with lye. Don't settle for the fume/odor free kind, it won't cut it. Then clean up using a small sanding block to keep surfaces flat, with fine grit paper like 1000 or finer to remove the least amount of metal and maintain dimensions. Finish up with 2000 or 2500 grit and polish. If you're experienced with a power buffer, that's the quickest, using care of course not to wallow the screw holes or round off the square edges.

Yes, I thin down the grips. I think you will like the grip contour better.

Just happened to see this already polished ERH today. All the work is done.

Will you be keeping your steel parts or selling them?

Jim

I would be interested in trading an already polished aluminum frame for the steel frame if it weren't for the lock. I'm going the other way after adding a steel ERH...

Hondo, Not having to re-finish a gun after "slight" alterations is one more advantage of the stainless finish. Thanks for that link!

Yep, the lock is going to go!

I plan on keeping all the parts I change out. I always do just in case I sell it latter, don't have any plans for that. I'll just put them back in the box and throw it up in the attic. I keep all boxes and original parts anyway. The attic is full of gun, stero, and other boxes.

I'm pretty sure I will also swap out the hammer for a SBH hammer too.

Thanks again for all the great help.

Say Hondo, I'm probably not going to alter the gun to fit the grip frame. How possiby far off are we talking? (a hair width? or 1/16"?) Would it be something easy enough to live with?

Does anyone know of this source of grip frames: http://cas-town.com/WestFargoGunsmith/parts.html

Corbi

Worst case 1/16". Best case with a grip frame the same vintage as yours is perfect fit to a hair hi or low. In between the best and worst 1/32" and liveable.
Wes Fargo, Yes. Been around for some time. Measure your ear height, just take the grips off. And ask Wes if he has the same height which will depend on how old his inventory is.

Do you know if Wes selling factory parts or are they made up by some other source?

Thanks again for the help.

Corbi

Muley Gil, Thanks, I missed that in the Classifieds. I'll shoot you a pm.

Thanks again for the advise and information.

I heard back from Wes. His grip frames are Ruger take offs.
