GP100 two-piece grip

I just traded a Ruger SP101 for a 6" SS GP100 with a serial number in the later 170-. Looks to have been made in the late 80s. The Finish is about 99% and it's tight. I did not know that these ever had a two-piece rubber grip with the wooden inserts. I'm happy with the trade.

My first GP100 had the 2 piece grips. I found the rubber to be much harder than the newer ones.

Sounds nice! Is it a half lug? I recently found an early stainless half lug with the 2 piece grip. I think they feel like harder rubber than the later ones as well but they still feel great in your hand. The early grips, half lug and early roll mark font just make it look somewhat old school tough! Hard to believe they are 30 years old already!

I have never heard of a two piece factory grip on the early GP-100's...

I'd love to see pics of the grip off the gun...

It's not a half lug Ron but super nice for a gun that old. I new it was not shot much when I looked it over. The grips are harder then the 1pc style. I have owned many GPs and this one is tighter then any of them and most Smiths.

Very interesting, and kinda surprising to me that I have never heard of them before...I thought the whole point of the GP-100 post and locating pin design was to facilitate a slip-on grip...

I have a very late 1988 KGPF-340 (4", SS, fixed sight, half lug) that has the one piece compact grip...

The frame was designed to make it easier for companies to make grips of many different sizes.

The guns with the two piece grips also had the aluminum locating pin knurled so it would stay in place. Takes a pretty good whack to get it out usually. All the one-piece guns I've owned use a smooth locating pin.

This is correct. Took a good many whacks with a small brass hammer.
