GP100 grips

I just got my GP100 last weekend. I got a Hogue Tamer grip for it. I was enthused because it was going to "tame" things. But it's enough larger I don't get the trigger well enough. So for smaller handed individuals are there any grips that might be more recoil absorbing than the hard rubber stock grip but won't increase the reach to the trigger? Or am I stuck with the stock concrete, I mean rubber, grip?

If these are what came on yours, I think they are the best grip available for the GP.
Grips are pretty subjective but NONE of the rubber aftermarket’s have ever been an improvement ….. to me.

Me too....all my GPs keep the rubber/wood insert grip. The newer ones I bought the Hogues were ditched and originals ordered from Ruger.

I did try the Hogue on my 6" hunting GP....but didn't like how my gloves bunched up on the finger grooves.

Mine is this one and I believe I've since learned these are the compact grips. Apparently the Hogue Tamer I got is "full size" and make the trigger too far a reach for me. I'm thinking about trying Altamont and their checkered front/back strap rubber grip and their checkered rosewood inserts.

I like this one. I have two Altimont grips on order, but they are all wood and no rubber. I'll let you know what I think after they come in...

Yes, those look like the compacts. I prefer them on my 3 inch GP but like full size on others. Here’s a pic from Ruger’s web site of the full size. They’re $45 but out of stock. They’re plentiful ….. you may even find a used set here if you put up a classified

Check out the compact Letts style grips. I've got them on my Alaskan for comfort and better trigger reach for me.

That looks a lot like what came on it except with nicer looking grip panels. Second from the bottom on the right. Fine looking gun though.

Grip fitment is a personal thing. Each hand size is different.

Seeking recoil management,, a well fitting grip is a huge help. Material (wood, horn, rubber, etc) can also make a difference.

But I can say that the Match Champion grips for the GP's are quite good & fit well IN MY HANDS!

I went the other direction for grips on my GP-100 .44 Special and use nice small boot Badger grips. Conceal better. But is a handful to shoot. Try not to use rubber on my guns if I can help it.

My suggestion? Don't write off a slightly firmer material if the shape is right. A grip that fits your hand like it was molded for you will do more for control and comfort than a soft, ill-fitting one. See if any local shops have a case with some used GP100 grips you can just hold, or order from a place with a good return policy.

As others have noted, I’ve tried other aftermarket grips on both my GP-100’s and SP-101’s and ended up going back to the stock factory rubber grips with wood inserts. As a side note, go to ALTAMONTFACTORYOUTLET on GunBroker and you can often find new Ruger grips there to bid on with most eventually going for anywhere between $10-$20.

I ordered a set of panels from Chig's Grips. They will fit my stock grip and swap over if I get the Altamont checkered grip. Still a possibility.

The tamer is a bit deeper. I'd suggest the standard Hogue. If it feels too deep you could mod it a bit to customize for your grip.

Ebay has a lot for around 20 bucks.

Those smaller grips are also popular so you could sell them easy or possibly trade.

I've ordered the Altamont checkered front/back strap grip and will put the Chig's Grips panels in. This is my set of panels on the way, Claro walnut.

I got a set of Hogue grips for Christmas! G-10, for my Sp101. They are machined very nicely, and feel pretty good in the hand, without the gun. Unfortunately, it'll be a few days before I can get to putting them on...

I never liked the GP type grips. It's not that they're uncomfortable it's just that they have no soul. I have no idea where these inserts were made on my Super Redhawk, but at minimum they're not (to me) as unpalatable as most.

If one were to go with all wood grips Hogue and Herrett's (and possibly Badger) will make grips to fit one's hand. You send them a hand tracing when ordering.
