do any of you guys use a 4in gp 100 for whitetail deer? if so, how many yards will you go?

I usually carried mine for back up, But would shoot comfortably about 25 yards. I did shoot one a few years ago at about 20 yards he went down and tried to get up and let him have another and it was game over. Pistol hunting is great up close, But I do prefer my Scoped Super Blackhawk in 44 mag.

Indy

Have a 6"er and consider 50 yards about the furthest, shooting a near-max charge of H110 and a 158 XTP.

Patience & shot placement is a must when handgun hunting with any caliber.

Please check your states regulations on handgun hunting as most states have a caliber/barrel length/power factor laws.

GP

I recommend the Remington 180g S-JHP, minimum launch velocity in excess of 1200fps.
I suggest your "distance" be determined by your ability to sustain hits on a paper plate.

this will be my first year hunting with a handgun, im starting to kick myself in the butt for getting rid of my redhawk 454. live and learn!

I shoot a Hornady 180gr. XTP and it is very accurate out to a hundred yards. Though I would be on the safe side from 50 to 75 yes.

Use it for deer. It's fun. I used to live in WI, where they measured the barrel length from firing pin to muzzle, so it was good to go. Apparently some other states are less understanding.

I'd recommend a cast lead bullet or boolit, due to the ability to get higher velocity from it. Lots if good ammo out there for it, though. Both jacketed and un-jacketed. SWC preferred, but anything with a wide meplat and good velocity. Stay above 158gr.

Distance depends on the shooter and the load.
I have a 6 inch that use to shoot NRA Bullseye with iron sights. My limit is 50 yards. If I put a scope on it I might push it out further.

schloss in wisconsin they do measure firing pin to muzzle and it used to be 5 1/2" inch minimum so a 4" basrreld revolver would be fine. but they have changed it now and its 4" from pin to muzzle. im able to use my 454 snub.

hunt with a 357 like you would with a bow. distances can be stretched a bit but i wouldnt recommend it. use the right tool for the job.. hard cast bullets

Like Jammer said...just "bow hunt" with your GP100. I use a 3" SP101 and the last two deer I shot were 30yds. (It is legal here in TN..."any legal centerfire cartridge" as pertaining to handguns w/no barrel length restrictions) Those were my longest shots. The others were 25yds and under. I am not a bullseye shooter, but I commit to the revolver and leave everything else at home. I spend lots of time in a tree and wait for the shots I know I can hit in the pie plate....this results in watching lots of deer walk off that would be easy pickins for a rifle. I must say, it gives me great pleasure to look at my trusty little Ruger as not only my daily carry, but also as my deer rifle! By the way, I have killed every deer (6) with that gun using factory Federal 158gr JSP ammo (this year will be handloads). The one deer I lost was only because it ran into a swamp. All others ran short distances and had 2 holes in them. Good Luck!

This is right on.

If a Whitetail Deer comes through the front door and threatens me or my family he is a goner. I guarantee it. :D

No, he's not. First, there are no whitetails in your neck of the woods. Second, your Home Owner's Association doesn't allow hunting in or around your home. Third, you'd have to take the carcass somewhere else to butcher it.

Quit bragging and lying.

Not bragging, just the facts.
..and Wolfsong you don't even have a GP-100 nor do you know how to post pictures so why are you hastling me?

Like any firearm or employed hunt instrument- within limitations and capabilities.

My GP100 4 inch has seen little use in the field,in favor of SA 44 Special,Mag.
