My Honda powered mower that I got some 15 years ago for $35 in a thrift shop has been acting up lately needing a carburetor tune up, but since I already had a Ryobi 40v cordless pole chainsaw and leaf blower I decided to get a Ryobi 20" 40 volt push (to help me stay in shape) mower.

I took if for a spin today and it's pretty cool. Running it's quiet enough to use and not wake neighbors in the semi-dark morning before the sun fully rises and it gets too hot, sufficiently powerful enough to cut the 5" long tough Florida "grass" and the 4Ah battery did my whole front (I do not have grass on sides or back on the house) yard. As a bonus the battery had enough leftover power for the leaf blower to clean up the mess with ~25% reserve!

No more gas smell in the garage, no gas can to keep filled, and my neighbor who is a small engine mechanic loved my gift gas mower with a spare new Honda carburetor! :-)

I have a Honda powered Craftsman mower that is at least 20 years old. Little hard to start when I first take it out in the spring but it runs like a champ.

My concern with battery powered things is that the batteries die and you might not be able to get replacements. Had that happen with my first cordless drill. Now I'm in that situation with my cordless drill, circular saw, and multi-tool. If I was a professional who destroyed a tool in a year or two, it would be different.

I have some of the Ryobi 40-volt tools and have seriously considered getting the mower. The larger push mowers come with a 4-500 dollar price tag, and, although I have three of the 40-volt batteries, I'd likely need to get a couple more, for another couple hundred bucks. It normally takes me about 1.5 hours to mow, and I'm pretty sure one battery won't make it. Still thinking about it though.

Small yard in front, now no yard in back (not counting the drop down into the canyon, that's "unimproved". So I bought an AC more a few decades ago. Still going and will likely out last me. As to the "unimproved" area I used to do the mandatory brush clearance myself. These days I pay a few college kids to do it.

My 20" push mower cost $299 (tool only not the self powered model) and considering I needed a mower anyway and had batteries it was a sensible option. If you were nearby I'd let you give mine a tryout :-)

No more gas smell in the garage

That's a dang shame....no gas smell in a garage is like no pee smell in a horse stall....some smells are just expected, if not comforting.....;)

I do enjoy the convenience of battery powered tools. I have several Ryobi One + 18V tools that serve me well around the house from drills, saws, vacuum for the smoker, blower for the decks to a auger (although the auger wasn't the smartest purchase...lacks real power where the ground is rocky). But for mowing my property definitely need the John Deere tractor, Echo string trimmer and Echo backpack blower....and the smell of gas/50:1 Tru Fuel.
