Well, I went off the track on the SS thread when I got into Gas prices.
I thought I might mention here for those of you interested that one way to lower your costs a little bit is to sign up for and purchase your fuel requirements using :
GASBUDDY it lowers your cost by $0.05/Gal ( not a giant drop I admit) and is billed directly to your checking acct. Usually when you first get the card, they offer something like a $0.15/gal discount on your first purchase.
You can also check on your phone for prices in your area or in the area where you are traveling to find the lowest prices and where they are located. A side note is that you can report prices and/or confirm reported prices and earn points towards a $100 cash card contest.

Something I found out recently is that if you use a debit card at the pump you get the cash not credit price if they are different. Where I am that’s about 3 to 5 cents usually.
 
I drive up to the pump.
I put the gas in.
I drive off.
Worrying about a few cents a gallon is way down on my list.
I have a lawn to mow and I have to wax this darn truck I just put gas in.
My motorcycle takes premium. You want to complain about prices?
But I ride up, fill up, and ride off. Life is short. Feel the wind in my face..... :mrgreen:
 
This gas pricing is a game to the gas companies. Any excuse let's raise it. They raise it 10 cents at a time and dribble it back down a penny at a time. As for the debit card and getting the cash price. I've had it work both ways I guess it depends on the station. I use Gasbuddy to check prices but that's all I do. Need to check out these savings. Thanks for the tips! I'm heading to FL for as few days in the AM. FL is usually a little higher and SC is usually the lowest. Ga isn't as good as it used to be for lower gas prices.

I use EXXon on their credit card, plus a PLENTI card that is honored by Rite-Aid drug stores, Macy's Dept. store and EXXon. Using the Exxon card gets me a "loyalty reward" of about $2~3 off my statement, plus points on my Plenti card has gained me as much as $25 discount on a $27 purchase. Average about $20 savings each month.

gasbag:I'm with you. I don't look at gas prices. I need gas, I don't have time to drive across town to save 10 cents a gallon. My tank holds 15 gallons. If it were completely empty, I wouldn't save enough to get a cup of coffee from Starbucks. Life is too short...
 
I have watched guys drive 15-20 miles out of their way for 5 cents a gallon........ and I laugh.

Let's use simple numbers. 20 gallon tank and 20 mpg.

$.05/gallon savings x 20 gallons = $1 total savings. 10 miles at 20 mpg = 1/2 gallon. A half gallon at $2.50 a gallon is $1.25. You've now spent more money than you saved to chase that nickel.

Now continual savings with a club card may be worth it if the station/brand isn't a hassle, but chasing a few cents a gallon is a loss most of the time.

AH YES!! The "Plenti" Card; My local Winn-Dixie switched to that and you get "points" buying groceries. They have an "ON LINE" web site where you can take surveys, join conversations, , etc etc and get points for particioating. The points are then your entry into a monthly drawing for "Plenti-Points" In November, I won 10,000 Plenti-points on my card which is good for $100 off while shopping at Winn-Dixie (DANG, missed the big one, 100,000 points good for $1000.) Haven't tried it for gas, I get by with 10-12 gallons/month.

Ditto for dirt poor university student in 1960/61; Once got Phillips 66 ETHYL for $0.12/gallon during a "PRICE WAR" in Oklahoma City.

Don't "chase" the prices; I usually go by the cheapest stations when I'm out grocery shopping and find that "Murphy" gas at Walmart is ALWAYS one of the lower cost ones.
 
When I needed gas, I bought gas. But when I was on the road a lot I tried to remember where all of the cheap gas prices were and bought from them when I drove by them.
 
Our gas prices here south of Phoenix are currently around $2.25-2.35 for regular. We use Safeway Rewards which gives us discounts at their filling station (or Chevron), and my spreadsheet says I've paid an average of $1.59 a gallon in 2017 thus far. I fill up the Chevy 3500 about once a month. The TBird and the motorcycles get premium without any discounts.
 
If you use a Walmart credit card at their station or Murphy you also get a discount off the posted price. Either at the pump or on you statement. Usually 3-5 cents
 
Unless I'm out of town/traveling, I buy all my gas at a station about 2 miles from my house where they are as cheap as anyone in town and they pump your gas. I also burn no-ethanol gas exclusively; I costs a bit more but my truck runs so much better on it and gets 1 to 2 mpg better on it. I also use nothing else in my four-wheeler and small engines. I don't look at the price much anymore. Nothing I can do about it anyway.
 
I do the majority of my grocery shopping at Kroger which gives me "points" to be accumulated and used as a discount at their stations. Bought $200 worth of food last week which translated into 30 cents a gallon off the price of fuel. Filled the truck and a couple of gas cans for $1.64 a gallon........
 
Must be another Southern Thang!

Wish I lived in California where I could pay a dollar more a gallon!
 
If you're in Southern Commiefornia you can save a little on gas using the Von's/Albertson's Grocery reward program. Put your phone number in the computer at checkout in the store and then, when you go to a Chevron Station, put your phone number in the pump keypad and you get a discount on the fuel. I've found a Chevron station not too far from me that has the lowest diesel fuel price in the county (verified via Gas Buddy app - don't know why but they're lower priced then even the independent and discount gas stations) and the discount from the store rewards is usually 20 cents a gallon, although sometimes it's 10 cents and sometimes it's 30 cents (maybe depends on how much you bought at the grocery store that week). So between the low price on diesel and the discount I'm saving between 40 to 50 cents a gallon compared to going to the next lowest priced station in the area. Although, because it's Commiefornia, with the highest fuel taxes in the country, I'm still getting reamed...just not as much. That's probably the same program tinman mentioned above because Kroger is Albertsons out here.
 
Hhmmmm, and before I start let me qualify my statement: I'm not sure, but when I bought my last very pricey boat, the dealer highly recommended I buy brand name gasoline for the motor.

Low cost, no name gasoline can be deleterious to you equipment.

Your cost savings now, may mean sacrificing your motor, this and that....is doing so worth it?

I live (almost uncomfortably) close to a gasoline distribution center. There are tanker trucks from many different brands and many unmarked coming out of there. Gas is gas.

Well, in my case, "a few cents" a gallon IS worth noting. I had my supplier fill my tanks 1st week of December. $2100 and that will happen at least 3 times a year.
