Frost Bite

No, it didn't happen today but back in January I got a bit of frostbite on my right foot. Outside of right little toe and tips of 3-4 others got nipped. Being the person I am, I decided to just watch the spots and make sure they didn't get necrotic. Over the past few days most of the spots have sloughed leaving clean skin underneath. The little toe is a bit more than just peeling skin and is going to take a while to get fully back to normal. Couple of days back, the sloughing skin/callous snagged on my sock and pulled off a bit early. It's tender as heck and most likely will be for quite a while until the callous fills back in.
Oh well, it could have been much worse but it sure does limit footwear selection.

When we were having that same cold snap, one of my dogs took off after some deer. I called and called, and even got in the jeep and drove about 2 miles in every direction looking for her. She finally came back over 2 1/2 hours later, after I had been out in minus 20 wind chill for that same amount of time looking for her. She has frostbite on the tips of both ears, and I doubt they will ever be the same, or grow back the hair they've lost.

I don't beat my dogs, but sometimes I sure am tempted...

Frostbite is nothing to be casual about. It can cause underlying damage to the body. BE CAREFUL!

Seems frost bite is not something to take lightly... took something like 50 years for the VA to determine my father was disabled from it.... all the time I knew him he had trouble with his feet and his hands. Of course living through 30 below for 10 days and having only summer fatigues will do that to you.

I have some frost nip from my time at Fort Greeley. That’s where I finally learned how to cover my ears, with my pile cap, and to keep my gives on.

I had to wear Army issue mittens a few times too, with mucluc’s. And I had to wear Mickey Mouse boots at times. It was crazy cold up there.

There are different levels of frostbite but, yes if there's deeper tissue damage, gangrene resulting from the dead, necrotic tissue is a serious side effect. What happened to me was skin deep and left surface blisters like blood blisters with similar results. Twenty years back, I lost a bit of my left ear due to frostbite. Dr. said it's got to go NOW--snip, snip, stitch stitch.
