We may be going to Franklin [friends timeshare]around July 18.Gonna take our 10 yearold grandson hopefully.Looking for outdoor things to do with him.We have been to Cherokee several years ago and really liked it [fished in the streams, etc]also any good gunshops around the area?Hope to do Gunsmoke with him--is it still there? Thanks Paul

Take the boy to a gem mine and let him play in the dirt and look for gems!
Don't miss the gem museum downtown.

Another fun thing to do is ride in the tow truck with the local guy when you have to have your car pulled back up a cliff that you slid off of in the mud and rain. ...and remember, "don't tell Mom". :D :D

Jimbo--i thought you were a Miami native !
Lots of folks from Florida go the Carolinas in the summer to escape the heat. Franklin / Highlands area is particularly popular. :D :D

And the problem is.. Florida people can't drive worth a hoot in the mountains!

Just joking with ya, Jim!

GD1656,,, that area is a bit west of me,, but a good place to "relax." Cherokee has been changing over the years,, with the casino,, but there are some really good things there too. I HIGHLY recommend an evening spent seeing "Unto These Hills" in Cherokee. A visit to the native village is also fun.
Fishing in the streams is always popular, but be SURE to get all the correct licenses. (A state fishing license, a special trout stamp, and if in Cherokee, get their license.)
I'm assuming you meant "Ghost Town in the Sky" in Maggie Valley, not Gunsmoke. At the moment, they are closed due to repairs to a water line,,, but may be back open by the time you get here.
While not much for the kids,,, but excellent for the ladies is a trip to the Biltmore House in Asheville.
Gun shops,,,, there are a few up & around Franklin,,, but I'm not up there enough to know which ones are the best. But,,, if you get into Asheville, & not on a Sunday, Leicester Pawn & Gun is worth a visit. Not hard to find & a pretty good stock of odds & ends!

Now,,, as Number9 has politely stated,,, a lot of "visitors" from Florida, (as well as Ohio, New York, Michigan, New Jersey, etc) seem to have a hard time in our curvy mountains. They creep along while on the two lane roads, pointing, braking, gawking etc,, all while NOT understanding that the natives only have that ONE road to use to get to work or whatever. Yet, the same folks who creep along on the 2-lanes,,, will floor it on any straight stretch, or especially the interstate. So, as you visit,,, be mindful of the folks behind you & if you can, occasionally pull aside & allow the locals a chance to get to work on time.
As for those of us who are from the mountains & driving on the flat roads,,, well, I got more tickets in Florida than I have here. Why? I have FUN being able to drive faster there than here! But,,, now that I've aged a bit & slowed down in general,, I haven't had a ticket in years. But,,, you won't find a line of traffic behind me anywhere,,, unless I'm behind a slow-poke,,,, no matter what state I'm in! :D :D :D

Lastly,,, if you are going to be in the Asheville area,,, and know it ahead of time,,, maybe we could meet over at Leicester Pawn & gun? I work the Asheville area a lot!

I been driving since I was 14 (73 now) and I've driven on EVERY kind of road, Hills, mountains, up hill, down hill, flat lands, straights, curvy, WIDE, narrow, You name it. I even drove on the dike between rice paddies in Korea ( of course I had a jeep; In 4 wheel because it had been raining and it was MUDDY. Should have seen how close together the other jeep was we met coming from the OTHER direction on that dike !!     I could have leaned out and Kissed the other driver <I knew him anyway> )
I've driven everything from an old '49 Studebaker LandCruiser, a '56 Ford hauling a camping trailer, a bob tail truck, tractors, '57 Merc Marauder, Deuce and a Halfs, 3/4 ton utilities, '65 Cutlass-- and a '69 Alfa Romeo Spider; Well you get the idea; so Curvy roads, Icy roads muddy roads and FLAT straight Super highways don't bother me a BIT.
Love the road up to Contender's place and Yeah the "tourists" ARE a pain in the BUTT, but we get the same thing here with the SNOWBIRDS.

We have been to "Until these hills"-but we want our grandson to see it and i did mean Ghosttown--and we have fished the streams around that area.Just found out we will be staying in Dillard Ga.I'm sure we will be busy hiking, fishing and gem mining also! Thanks for the info.

Ok CG,,,, I know you can take that Volvo & enjoy our curves & hills! And yes,,, the snowbirds do head to Fl & create issues for y'all as well.
Do like I do,,,, pass them on these 2 lane roads in places that scare them a bit. :D :D

GD1656,,, glad to offer those few tips,,, but if you are going to be in Ga., I'm no help!
Enjoy yourself!

We have 75mph speed limits on farm roads here...up to 80 on parts of I-10 and 85 on some toll roads. Cross over into NM and it's 65 except for the interstates. Yes,you can make good time and you need to because places are far apart.

I was taking the toll road bypass (the $11 is worth it) around Austin last year doing about 83-85 when a Porsche blew by at ???..probably well over 100. It kills fuel economy though.

Have fun and be safe.

If you are staying in Dilard Ga, make sure to visit the Dilard House for a meal or two! They cure their own hams, make their own jams (great apple butter), and grow a lot of their own veggies. Good food. Served family style
