Wife & I saw this last night at our local theater. I would rate this a B- small budget film.
They showed a beach scene, channel crossing in small boat, and aircraft dog fights.
The beach was beautiful, clean & tidy. No evidence of battle or thousands of people in disarray

Directing: They keep switching from one story line to another quickly and at odd times. Thumbs down
Scenes: Good locations and good filming technique. Well done
Acting: Acting was ok. Basically from the viewpoint of 3 different people.

Perspective: after it was over my wife asked “when did this happen and why?”
I was surprised by her question, but realized the film NEVER addressed this or put the events into perspective.

Well, actually...

Take a look at photographs of the actual Dunkirk evacuation. It was a retreat, not an invasion like D-Day. What you'll see is thousands of men on the beach, but the only real signs of battle are off in the distance. Typical of the Brits, there was no panic, and men mostly just lined up patiently waiting for their turn to get on a boat. Yes, there were dogfights, some strafing and bombing of the beach, but the ongoing fighting was taking place at rearguard French and English positions, not on the beach.

Not that it wasn't a harrowing experience, and a close thing, but frankly Hitler pretty much just let 'em leave -- one of his big mistakes.

I am of mixed feelings about going to see the film; I think the REAL story is that of the various boat owners who risked it all to help evacuate the troops from that beach.

Saw it this afternoon with my wife. B-/C+ is about right IMO. A bit much was added to make it Hollywood dramatic I think.

Hi...
Saw this movie yesterday.
The hype was that it was a terrific movie.
Actually, doesn't match the hype...just an average movie.
Good, not great...
FWIW... I would rank it below Pearl Harbor.
Not really impressed.
Great idea for a movie... poorly executed.

Not to sound disrespectful but it would sort be assumed that anyone who was interested in the movie would know the significance of the title.
After Dunkirk, I would not have held it against the British to never take another German POW(kill 'em where they stand).

Saw it last night C+ compared to movies overall-

Compared to the modern movies now playing- comic book and Prog/Commie propaganda baloney- a solid "B+"

Strange though- if you don't know the history and see it, you would be totally lost- that means most kids who see it won't have a clue about WTH is going on.

The air combat scenes were pretty good but overall it was a bust. IMHO it did not portray the Brits as the professionals they were. I saw a WWII documentary years ago where a German veteran was talking about some British soldiers his unit captured at Dunkirk after a hard fight. He commented that the Brits marched in step to the rear singing "Its a long way to Tiperrary". He commented "By God they were SOLDIERS."

I disagree with all of you who have commented so far. I thought it was a B+ or A-, and highlighted on the three key aspects of the incident. It chose to use individual stories rather than mass actions. It is a drama, not a documentary. I think it showed the resolve and discipline of the Brits and the heroism of the RAF pilots fighting against enormous odds as well as the civilian response to the call for help, focusing on a specific private boat owner who comes to the aid of the soldiers out of his sense of duty. I think it well conveyed the sense of desperation and hopelessness that was real at the time as they had been beaten into this withdrawal and it seemed had no chance to avoid total destruction. (From some of the history I have read the key element was the ego of Hermann Goering, head of the Nazi air forces, who felt he could totally wipe out the troops trapped on the beach and gain the "glory" of the operation without having to share it with the Army).

I'm just glad that they're still making movies about WW II. With the Greatest Generation so sadly slipping away from us, and taking so much history with them, and with so little importance placed on world history in public schools, it's so vitally important to maintain an awareness of the price paid to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

One theory -- as good as any -- is that he really did not want to fight the English. He regarded them as racial kin of the Germans (as they are), and felt that a defeat on the Continent would cause them to seek a peace accord -- maybe even an an alliance against Russia -- after which he could turn to the East, the prize he really wanted, without worrying about a two-front war.

We'll never know, but it fits in with his strange world view.

Peter Brimelow of VDare, himself a Brit, watched Dunkirk and came away with the following reaction: "People Should Be Hung From Lampposts, They Should Be Burned Alive, For What They’ve Done To Britain."

But (director Christopher) Nolan’s achievement goes far beyond avoiding trouble. Quietly, possibly inadvertently, he has made a movie that celebrates national identity.

He does this simply by showing a real nation in action . . .

But the real reason that Dunkirk’s inconveniently honest portrayal of Britain and its army in 1940 is so stunning: successive British governments have, in the twinkling of an eye (to quote Handel’s Messiah)  utterly destroyed that world through immigration policy.

Ouch.

At the end of the film you heard Churchill

We will FIGHT!

Now the leaders of England are tweeting like scared canaries

Run and hide...

GD awful and a disgrace.

A great article-

"He does this simply by showing a real nation in action. USA Today’s reviewer Brian Truit* has been beaten up for observing that “the fact that there are only a couple of women and no lead actors of color may rub some the wrong way”.

* A true Prog/Commie fully deversified idiot.

Hombre,
There were no women at Dunkirk, except maybe a few nurses, and no "Lead actors of color".
Every body today has the idea that minorities were really a big contributor to the war.
Aside from the "Tuskegee Airmen" A great group or pilots BTW, and a few other groups, there were no "People of color"
in WWII.

Around 1 million black men and women served as draftees and volunteers in every arm of US service. That's more than a "few".

You forgot the Red Ball Express. They kept supplies moving out of Cherbourg
up to the folks like my dad that needed them. It ran for a relatively short time, but without them the advance would have ground to a halt tout de suite.

I loved it.

It helps to know what you're getting into with a Christopher Nolan film. This one is more straight forward than Memento or Inception, but you still have to pay attention.

There are three timelines, which he puts in big letters right on the screen.

1) The Mole
One Week
All the action at the mole (jetty) and the beach takes place over a week.

2) The Sea
One Day
All the action on Mark Rylance's little boat takes place over the course of a single day.

3) The Air
One Hour
All the action on Tom Hardy's Spitfire takes place in one hour.

He then weaves them all together. Sometimes you'll see the same event from more than one perspective. By the end all of the timelines come together.

It is a masterful piece of film making.

If you invest the effort to keep the timelines straight, you'll be rewarded with a fantastic movie experience. If you don't, you won't.

See it in IMAX. It's worth it.

I went to see the movie this afternoon and while the NUMBER of troops on the beach does not match reality, the aircraft perform some surprising feats, The number of small craft that arrived is also lacking true quantities, there were NOT enough German Aircraft to reflect reality;
I DO HAVE TO SAY , Overall, I thought it was an excellent movie and a good representation of what actually happened, Some of it brought tears to my eyes.
If you haven't seen it, GO see it.

Ran across this today; a pain to go through but shows the REAL Dunkirk.
