I got my driver license renewed in Kerrville,TX yesterday.

Sooooooooooo what? :lol:

Now you have to show birth certificate or passport in order to play. I have an expired passport.

I just learned of the change yesterday and have not researched the reasoning.

I renewed recently also. They needed my birth certificate for this renewal, but they would not accept the original. Had to go to the state and pay 25 bucks for a copy. :?

Further, Oregon has resisted the REAL ID mandate, and thus far is not complying. So, I would ask, why did they need proof of ID for this renewal?

I don't have a big issue with this sort of proof BUT I also don't think the illegals should get a pass if they can't produce the same level of proof.
I was involved in some sort of transaction in which a clerical person demanded "additional identification". I produced a reduced copy of birth cert, state driver's license, state issued "non-drivers ID", TWO ID's from Federal agencies(both required an FBI background check BTW), and finally, a voter registration card. The voter ID did the trick even though it was plain card stock that could be replicated on many newer printers while the ID badges were most definitely legit.

Be glad you are not in AZ. When I moved to AZ I had to produce my birth certificate
to get an AZ license, BUT I also (would have) had to pay $40 EXTRA, to have the
little star added that says you have passed all that crap. Interesting part is that my
CO license ALREADY HAD IT! - - - AZ wants EXTRA to perpetuate a previously
completed "check"! - - - I told them I refused to fly, so they could keep it. :roll:

Yeah, the real ID is a joke, especially the way they screwed it up here in Commiefornia. They required a bunch of different items to "verify" your address. When I went in for mine I asked the clerk at the DMV if they had my address in their computer system. Of course they did, since I already had a valid DL. I asked why that couldn't be used as one of the forms of ID? All I got was an "I don't know" shrug. And then, of course, the first few months worth of Real IDs, they apparently they didn't do it correctly (according to the feds) so the wife and I get letters from the DMV in the mail saying they needed one more form of verification of address to make it a valid Real ID. Their solution to this was to have you sign and date the letter they sent you at your address that they have in their computer system and send it back to them. So, what they did is they used the address they had in their computer system which they couldn't use before to verify your address to verify your address when they found they screwed up. :roll:

The "real I.D." is only necessary for flying within the US - so if you never intend to fly anywhere, a normal ID/DL is valid.

If a person has a US passport, it's a legal substitute for a "real I.D." DL.

Other sources include SS offices, No word found on whether previously-opened bank accounts (or credit union accounts) would need to re-qualify once the Real ID law takes effect on a federal basis.

But also, both my wife and I have renewed our drivers license and we didn’t need a passport or birth certificate. (For the “new” licenses. We renewed online, I think you can do that ever other renewal, and then in between you have to go to the DMV.

I’ve read the TSA will no longer accept the older licenses as prof of ID.

Have to go through the same thing here in Maryland. My passport, SS card, and two different items showing your address like a bank statement and an electric bill. All needed was to make and appointment. My wife had hers renewed a couple months ago. She wife was in and out in less than 30 minutes.

It took about an hour because of folks in front of me. Actual time to renew was about 5-10 minutes. Kerrville office is smallish with three workers but they are efficient and friendly. You can get it done (or the driving test) here on the second and fourth Thursdays,8AM-12.

I recently renewed my drivers license and it says in big block letters:

"NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION" WTF? :x

Shortly after I got it, I had to fly to Salt Lake City for a Grand daughter's wedding. I have one of those things that allows you to go to Mexico or Canada and be able to come back home, kind of a mini passport. I took that along just in case but both times they accepted my DL without question. Now if I'd have left it at home, you know darn well what would have happened.

I suspect Motor Vehicles fees are a cash cow in many states.

Florida requires a photo ID - the most common of which is usually a DL.

Try to buy ammo in CA today, as a CA resident, without it... CA DOJ makes up the rules as they go along, and what's on paper in black and white on their website doesn't even hold water!

One of the "greatest things about the US" I learned somewhere between third and fifth grades (skipped fourth) is that we DON'T need "our papers" to travel within the country (or, by extension, conduct our daily business.) Yet here we sit, with the gubb'mint actively instituting a backdoor version of "our papers" and all we hear is little more than a whimper from "We the people."

I had to go through this six years ago.
Problem is I didn't have a birth certificate. So I had to get one.
But when the state has no record of your birth and the hospital doesn't keep records that long I had to come up with proof of where I was born and it needed city and county of birth.
Voter reg? No. Used to work for the state. No records there.
Fi ally the FAA had it in my records. They were great in helping me.
Took it to the state and had all the forms signed by myself and a witness, notarized, bent, folded, spindled and mutilated. Got my b/c which was the form I filled out.
Got my d/l which was supposed to be the real ID.
I since had it renewed and it was supposed to be compliant. It wasn't.
I won't renew it until I have to.

I have an appointment at the end of July to do the real ID license renewal. I hope the Md. MVA accepts my South Carolina birth certificate that is the size of a drivers license. It looks nothing like the birth certificates I see now. It does say official though.

I got my Real ID license in California about 8 months ago. I wasn't really much trouble and only took about 20 minutes at the DMV. So the state has now verified who I am, big deal. They did not require any information that I didn't want to give them. It's no "our papers" big deal to me. If anything ever comes up, I'd like to be able to verify who I am just using that drivers license instead of having to round up a bunch of stuff with some of it in my safe deposit box. My drivers license is always right there in my wallet.

I wanted to get Veterans status AND Real ID on my DL last year. Went by the local DMV and they told me what to bring in. Went back the following week and got both. Took about 15 minutes.
