crown condition

I passed on this GP100 due to the crown. I think I could have cleaned up the appearance of everything else, but that crown looks a little rough. Here is the link:

Looks like a police trade-in. I bought one that was a Canadian trade-in but looked much better than the one on Gun Broker. It was DAO and had compact grips. It had the worst trigger action of any Ruger I have ever owned.

I would pass on the one you are looking at because of the crown. Looks like it hasn't has too much TLC.

The way I see it add $50 for shipping and transfer now at $330, for $100 more find a much better one locally.

To further my education what does the crown do for accuracy or velocity - whatever? I can see the crown is pretty bashed up but what I don't know is what affect it could have.

Looks more like a "do it yourself" crown job?? With that and the hammer spur cut off I wonder what other "improvements" were done to it???? :roll:

I'm a far cry from an expert, but doesn't the crown affect accuracy in that it is the last point of contact with the bullet before leaving the barrel. If the spin of the bullet is interrupted by a burr or other hanging chad, then it won't spin true. I'm sure someone with more experience can add more.

If I can add a few questions, I always see "target crown" or other "types" of crowns. What is the difference, and is one better than another? Wouldn't the gun maker put the best crown on a barrel to begin with?

That crown doesn't look bad to me. There maybe a little spot at about 4 o'clock, but I doubt that would affect anything.

And before we start rolling our eyes and calling it Bubba special, look at the top of that hammer. Not Bubba material there.....

Actually it is probably some foreign police/military contract revolver. Notice the CAI import stamp on it.

I was wondering about that 4 o'clock ding. I'm only learning all this but doesn't it appear to be "pushed into" the barrel thus making it likely the last point of contact?

I agree with tek4260, the crown doesn't look all that bad. The rest of the gun has been "rid hard/put up wet" IMHO.

As the bullet exits the bore the gas behind it gets 'shaped' by the crown.
If the crown is not symmetrical the gas can 'steer' or 'push' unevenly against the bullet's base, causing accuracy issues.

Looks to me like somebody maybe tried to clean up some muzzle marks with a cutter that chattered a bit. Negotiate the right price and take it home.. Recut the muzzle champher with the right tool..

Just looked and saw it sold for $280... I don't think I'd have paid that much for it..

Me either. In my experience the average selling price for a clean copy is usually only $50-75 more than an abused gun. I'm not sure why that is but you can't do much fixing for that kind of money.
