Looks like a lesson on 'what not to do' to me. He is lucky the driver didn't slam on his brakes and sling him into the train.....what an idiot.

I've heard that left handed people use the other side of their brain. This particular leftie appears to not use either side.
This happens more often than you might think. There was a Sheriff's Deputy who was dragged by a shoplifter that grabbed him through the open drivers window and sped off. If I remember correctly the vehicle was speeding on the wrong side of the street at 75mph before the Deputy shot the guy to stop him. The Deputy was cleared by the grand jury as a justifiable shooting
There is a court case many years old. I cannot remember that case name or its exact wording, but it's something like this. You cannot create your own peril and then use deadly force.
Watching the video, he created his own need to use or justify deadly force by climbing into the hood.
If the officer was justified to use deadly force before he stood in front of the car or climbed into the hood, then that case would not apply. We don't have enough information to believe if deadly force was lawful at the moment before he stepped in front of the car. Either way its tactically stupid to step in front of a vehicle that could run you over, unless you can shoot before stepping in front. If so, shoot until the threat stops.

I wonder at what point the cop decided maybe this ride wasn't my brightest idea, maybe when he found out the driver

That barking at the perp sure did a lot of good. That was one dumba** cop who did literally everything wrong. He should have been fired for poor judgement.

That cop saved his community millions of dollars and likely avoided prison for himself, he probably will have to pay for damage to the guys car.
Having taught Defensive Tactics and Firearms training in the academy. This cop should be fired. Pulling your gun up and demanding that the person should comply is not taught. Climbing on the car and pointing the gun through glass, while yelling is not taught.
Get the f down, and out of the way of that 2 ton vehicle. Stupid tactics. I’d like to know if he learned that from the academy, his FTO, his buddies, or TV.

I think in the video he said the guy had a warrant for forgery, doesn't seem like that calls for the theatrics this entailed.

I would have shot the car's engine with multiple rounds to disable the car,, BEFORE doing a stupid thing like getting on the car.
Maybe while in front of it,, shoot the radiator area etc. Car won't go far without fluids.

I was once in a pursuit with a stolen Toyota pickup. When stream begin to pour out from under the hood. I thought this will be over shortly. That 20 something year old pickup traveled about 20 miles as fast as the little truck could before coasting to a stop. Wouldn't have believed it until it happened.
