Checking a firearm when flying

Looks like the rules have changed slightly...

I know for a fact it used to be okay to have ammunition in a magazine and have had to loaded mags in my locked gun case many times....

Just read the Delta rules and this is what it says now:

"Ensure small arms ammunition is packed in the manufacturer's original package or securely packed in fiber, wood, plastic or metal boxes and provide separation for cartridges."

Never seen that before.. also the maximum weight of ammo has changed from 12lbs to 11.

Hi,

I dunno about the magazine part, but I know the 11 lb limit, and maybe the factory carton packaging rule, were in effect at least six years ago when a buddy wanted to bring stuff from his Dad's estate in FL out here. Dad passed in Feb. 2012, and, as with a few gun owners here and there, had a little more than 11 lbs of ammo.

When I was taking my annual firearms training with some friends last Dec. we had the debate about loaded magazines and I pulled up the TSA rules which proved me right that you could pack loaded mags in your check luggage. I think you might be right in that it is Delta now... I still need to check the specific TSA rules.

Here's actually what TSA says about magazines:
"Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm.

Sounds to me like according to the TSA loaded magazines in the same locked box as the pistol is okay.

While I'm on this subject... anybody have any experience with boarding an American Cruise Line River boat and any security they may have... these are the small boats on U.S. rivers? 150-180 people.

We'll see.. I started thinking about it yesterday... probably should have way before then.... but they pick us up in the morning and the itinerary specifically says they take our luggage to our room on the ship.... it does get handled separately... and who knows they might run it through a machine.... and we'll see about boarding... and what we go through with that...

It's been about a year, but Delta told me I could have loaded magazines in the box with the gun, when they did the security check. 11 pounds is a new one on me, when I flew out of Atlanta it was still 12 but it's not that big a deal. Seems to me they wanted the ammo all in one box and in original boxes. To be honest I didn't weigh it and neither did they.

When my now ex and I used to shoot HP metallic silhouette we had a lot more than 11 or 12 lbs. of ammo. I just took that to mean per piece of luggage. It worked for us, and I don't remember that they even asked about ammo. Maybe it's different now.

last year when I was flying out to Front Sight the front desk Delta 'girl' said the ammo had to be packed in its original box and she and I got into a debate about it. She finally realized that the TSA people in the back would be the final answer and just let me put the tag in my suit case on the locked box. Of course TSA did not call me out on it.... While in Nevada with my buddies I mentioned this and two of them emphatically stated ammo could not be in a magazine.... I went on the TSA web site and showed them how it was worded.. that magazines either LOADED or unloaded had to be packed in with the unloaded weapon.... Delta's rules says the cartridges have to be separated.... does not seem to me they are if they are in a magazine... I may have to write them about this. At least the last time I flew with a checked firearm (April) they had stopped 'wire tying' my checked bag.
