Charley Frank Pride (March 18, 1934[1] – December 12, 2020) was an American singer, musician, guitarist, business owner, and professional baseball player. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s, when he became the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley.[2] During the peak years of his recording career (1966–87), he garnered 52 top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, 30 of which made it to number one.

Pride was one of only three African-Americans to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry (the others are DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker). He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.

He will be missed.

I saw him in concert several times in the 70's.
I can't think of a single song he sang that wasn't good.

That's sad to hear. Charlie was a good one.
I remember when Ronnie Milsap was just starting out,, he opened for Charlie. My Dad was Ronnie's first professional manager,, and we went to a show with Charlie & Ronnie. An excellent show.
Ronnie has always spoken with respect about Charlie.

I'd have a hard time naming a single Charlie Pride song. But about two words into many of them and I'd know it was Charlie singing. I agree with the poster who said the black community should have paid him more attention. Fact is, he was a good model regardless of what color your skin is. Not only was he a great singer everything I have ever heard or read about the man indicates he was a stand up person. Browsing online today I saw posts from both Brad Paisley & Tracey Lawrence saying that he had helped them. It would seem he made an effort to help the newer people that came up after him.

My wife and I went to see Mr. Pride last year (May 2019 seems like a decade ago after this crappy year). Not only was he still a great performer and still had his voice, but he was entertaining, joking, and just made for a memorable night. He also had a few words of praise for the opportunity to perform onstage for a living. He was, simply put, outstanding after all those years. Fir all you who think country music is AWOL, don’t worry. Billy Ray Cyrus and his rapper buddy are coming to the rescue
