And I truly want them to succeed, but I went to Cabela's today to cash in my Club Points, before they are lost to the Bass Pro merger, to buy some ammo and pick out a Christmas present for my wife to give me. I don't know how they keep customers. And this is why I don't go there often.

Needed some domestic soft point ammo in 7.62x39. I was offered some help, so I gave him a chance. The young guy didn't understand the caliber, so I showed him how it would be printed on the box. Okay, here it is! He handed me a box of Red Army Standard. I said no, and I explained domestic is another way to say made in America. Oh here it is! He then showed me some Hornady ammo loaded with explosive varmint bullets. I told him we were getting closer, but I need soft point bullets, for deer hunting. "Okay, I'll ask if we've got some in the back". He came out some time later to say yes they do, but another employee would have to find it. Another twenty minutes, and he comes out to say they are out, and they're not ordering any more. Not bad. This only took a half hour so far.

Then I went to the binocular department. Nobody there, and nobody that could call for help, so I called the store on my cell phone to ask for some help in the binocular department. A feller showed up promptly, answered a couple questions, handed me some binoculars to look at, and disappeared to start helping others at the counter. Never came back to help me.

See ya later. :?

The liberal-minded employees available in that area maybe(it's just a job)? High employee turnover maybe? The Cabela's employees here in Pa are pretty knowledgeable and ALWAYS helpful and courteous.

When I was in there yesterday I asked for what I wanted (Tauirus PT111
G2) and we started what came out to be a true farce. The tablet that they
use for NIC had to have a lot of "help" to get it done.

Next came the PT111 out of the back. I've got a PT111 and I've read
many reviews, but this was the first one that was not worth having. When
the guy (about ten years younger than I am [74]) handed it to me I verified
the magazine was not loaded, then verified the chamber was empty
(DUH!) and then dry fired it. WORST trigger I've come across in years.
Had him get another one. Not as bad as the first one, but totally
unacceptable. Try for number three. Improved but not good enough to
purchase. Asked for number four and he asked me if he should bring out
the entire stock. I said I wanted one with a trigger as good as the one on
display, but if that was a problem then let's erase the NIC information on
the tablet and I would go home. He turned and got another one. Not
good but good enough to be worth trying.

We went to the register to pay for it and there were four just out of teen
age that were more interested in talking amongst themselves. Waited for
the NIC to complete. The guy at the register call my name and I went to
the counter. He went to talk with the others. He turned and said "What
was your name?" and I replied with a fair amount more force than before.
He turned back to his friends and chatted again. He then turned back to
me and asked my name. I said "I mispronounced it last time, it is
YOU-KEEP-IT!", turned, and walked away.

I'm beginning to think the "merger" will bring down both companies.

P.S. I was given a $20 discount for opening a Cabelas credit card, and
that was taken off the price of what I was purchasing at that time. As
such, I do not have any "points" to redeem, and that will doubtless be
the case from now on. - - - I also read that if you get a new credit card,
you will hurt your credit rating if you cancel it in the first six months.
Guess I'll cancel it next Summer. I'm going to use a magnet to make
sure it can not be used between now and then.

Glad to hear your store is better, but I suspect you're just lucky.

My experiences with Cabela’s hasn’t been this bad. I don’t know if’s it’s regional or not. I can imagine some stores having more experienced employees just because of their location. The store here in Allen has some guys who I’ve asked reloading questions and they tell me they don’t reload. But other times they have talked about hunting and real life experiences (vs just a few shots at an indoor gun range) with a particular gun. All in all though they were friendly.

When does the merger go through?

I guess i'm lucky in that my local Cabela's is pretty good. It does take about 30 min. to fill out the form and all the other crap they do. I find the staff friendly and helpful. It's a shame others have had a less than steller experience :(

Pat, the last two PT111's I bought were literally packed in a bag full of oil. No way to check them out.

Well, my Cabelas experience was just the opposite. We went there yesterday to get a few Christmas items. Not only did I have several employees offer help,,, and actually did help us,, all were friendly & such. Heck, one lady greeter got out of her chair at the credit card offer desk, to come over & thank me for my military service while I was at a different counter getting a gift card. (I was wearing my US Army ball cap.)
From what I was told about the BASS Pro points,, you will be able to redeem them at Cabelas soon.

Cabelas give Veterans a 10% discount. And,,, they had a promo going on to where they gave me a $25 gift certificate after my purchase. I gave it to Miss Penny & she used it immediately. And after her purchase,,, they gave her another $25 gift certificate. I promptly went back & got 2 more items,,, for $3.06 out the door.

The only negative thing,,, No OM Rugers for me to bargain for in the Gun Library.

The Cabela's in Tualatin, OR, just hired 70 new employees. I imagine there is a bit of a learning curve at any new job... and their Firearm's Manager left in October to ride trains around the country in his retirement. Tough to train a bunch of new people quickly, especially during the busy holiday season.

I got a Club Card there with a $25 credit on it, a free hat and a multi-tool. Picked up three 525 round boxes of Remington .22 LR ammo for $29.99 and a rebate form to send in to Remington for $10 (x3 = $30) back, bringing the ammo cost down to $19.99 per 525 rounds. I haven't seen prices like that for 6 or 7 years. Seems to me like I came out way ahead, and enjoyed my time there.

Cabela's and Bass Pro are going to continue operating independently. Each company's credit card will continue "as is" as well. Points are not expiring. Gift cards are still good (and can even be swapped between stores). Not sure why everyone is talking about the "end of the stores as we know them."

I like Cabela's and dislike Bass Pro. Hope my Cabelas stays the way it is (as the Merger FAQ says it will).

I received a piece of mail from them stating exactly this a while ago.

Points are not expiring, that's just another internet rumor.

That's at least part of why the guy was getting upset with my wanting to
get a good trigger; he had to wipe off the excess oil from each one.

I'm just glad I didn't have a negative effect on their stock on hand.

As to the "points" expiring . . . or not . . . If they behave like our business
is not wanted, who cares if they have "points" at all?

I once found a bargain in the fancy gun library. Once we agreed on the price and that NO TAPE would be put on or anywhere near the box, it then took me just over 90 minutes to get walked out the door with my purchase. Yes it was a great deal, but probably not worth the time it cost me. Fun place to go look around, but I usually spend my $$$'s elsewhere.

I always think it is funny when I know where stuff is and know more about the products they carry than anyone working there.
Usually I can get in there, grab what I need and get checked out in a fairly big hurry, the key is, don't talk to salespeople, just get your stuff and head to checkout

Try looking at optics like binoculars or Scopes and discuss light gathering or field of view or depth perception. Their eyes just glaze over. I've not met one yet that knows a thing.

All you experts should apply at Cabela's so the rest of the "community" can deal with you instead of the imbeciles that work there now.

Why no tape? Expensive/rare gun and a pristine box increases value? Just curious.

Don't know if I qualify as an expert, but if I were to do that, I would
probably be in jail by the end of the first day. I am retired from a company
that knew how business is run (well . . . at least it did), and to put up with
the "stuff" the managers there put out, there would be many "heart
attacks" in management; and I can not guarantee they would not be
lead induced.

Just another Ruger box---probably adds $25 to the package. They have some sort of policy that requires them to use their 2" wide special printed tape so you can't access your newly bought firearm until you are out of their store. Guess they never figured on people that daily carry a pocket knife. I just figured I would rather not find out how much of my box would come off with the tape. No tape on my new/old box is the reason they had to walk me out the door.

That's interesting. All the employees I've observed at our local Cabela's seem to be having the time of their lives and really enjoy what they're doing.

I have two Cabelas within driving distance and they both are staffed well with knowledgeable folks. They are the Hamburg, PA and the Christiana, DE stores.

I'm also close to the Atlantic City, NJ Bass Pro, but haven't made my way there yet. Maybe will take a trip before the holiday...
