I experimented extensively with building shot cartridges for .357 and .44 a couple years back. I didn't use capsules but messed with wads of different materials. I eventually enjoyed success by using a cork material wad over and under a #8 shot charge. Probably I should have tried the capsules and smaller shot but my homebrewed shells worked well. It was an enjoyable way to pass time and a fun learning experience but for the amount of shotshells one fires in a handgun, and the time spent messin' with making them, I decided to just buy the dern things as offered by CCI. They are excellent. Now if I could just find a big "hatband" to shoot....JMO, Dennis (PS. When testing handgun shotshells at "snake range" on plywood or other hard surface, be sure to wear eye protection! )
