I pretty sure that's not a brown bear or grizzly. its a fat, chocolate black bear. there has not been a grizzly sighting in CA. since 1947...

It doesn't matter what kind of bear it is. A mama bear with cubs can be an indecisive critter. If they feel there's a threat,, they will defend their cubs. If they think a retreat is a better idea,, they will.
But to see it advance a few times,, even after the woman is yelling,, says to me,, "Not good." But to have a second person appear,, the bear may have felt out-numbered,, and chose retreat.
Just like people are when on the street. The thugs will try & select a "weaker looking" victim to attack,, while a person who projects a strong attitude,, or when there are numbers,, the thugs retreat.
Either way,, those two appear to have gotten their bear education in a fashion I call: "Education by Disney!" Which is often WRONG!!!!!

Oh, and the purposed reintroducing was mostly fought by groups like Sierra Club. They were afraid they grizzlies would endanger people. They have also fought the reintroduction of wolves. But you won’t find that in their literature.

I have 'walked among bears' a few times and my preferred response upon meeting one at close range was to make loud noises. 20" 12 gauge or 4" 44 mag makes REALLY loud noises.

Those are Brown bears. I have hiked that trail in years past. They come down every night to dig in the trash.Lots of free food and pets to munch on. They also soak in the hot tubs. They do not fear humans. I have faced them several times. They will move on. They are lazy. Too much work to eat people. Just don't piss them off or go hiking with a Big Mack in your hand.
I have no desire to "walk among the bears" no matter what weapon I have on me.
I've read the Lewis & Clark journals and other books about the expedition and the Indian tribes warned them about the terrible bears. They seemed to feel that shooting them just pissed them off and with what normally be fatal or incapacitating wounds would cause the Grizzlies to come after you. Even being shot a few more times wouldn't stop the Grizzley. Lewis shot at one once and it chased him and was close to catching him when he entered a river to get away and he was saved by another expedition member getting a good fatal shot into the bear.
My son and his wife do go camping up into the mountains in northern Colorado every year. Make me nervous because of mountain lions and the smaller black bears, those are bad enough and theoretically there are no grizzlies in Colorado, but he camps in the norther part of the state near Wyoming. The bears might not know to not travel south into Colorado. No freaking way will I go camping there but heck, I don't go camping in my eastern state....LOL!
After the fatal grizzly attack a couple months ago even bears spray seems to be worthless. The last words they got from the two people were that the attack was bad, and they were out of bear spray. Both campers and their dog were killed. Maybe the bear spray pizzed the bear off!

The are not Brown bears. While they are brown in color they are simply a color variation of the Black bear species. Just as Brown bears and Grizzly bears have color variations (many species including humans have color variations) the species isn’t determined by external color. The only Grizzly, Brown, Polar or Pandas(not actually a bear) bears in California are in zoos.
Regardless of species of “bear” all, including the non bear Panda) are quite capable of killing an unarmed human. In their world we are not the apex predator.
As to fools who do stupid stuff with large predators they get what they deserve. While I generally dislike the currently popular expression it does fit the situation. FAFO!

I worked as security in a mid-sized 'camping resort' along the Arkansas River in Colorado in 2009. Part of the job was handling wildlife incursions. There were bears in the area within a couple miles of the campground but none closer that we knew of.
Being known to the local nuisance wildlife officer in Colorado, I was asked to help with one instance of a bear entering a State owned campsite and shots being fired by the camper. That was a mature bear by track size.
During my time off, I was scouting for elk and a few times was very close to black bears. Close enough that the bear's tracks were still filling with water where it crossed a low spot in the trail. Never saw any of these bears but by track size, they were small/young bears.

The camp site we stayed in at South Fork CO. had a Black Bear that would roam the site late at night. One camper would leave out a bowl of ice-cream for it and had pictures of it. Yea I know don't feed the bear.
I lived out side of Morgan City LA, and we had a Black Bear that would get stuff out of the garbage dumpster quite often. I saw it many times when coming home late at night. They even had a Bear Crossing sign on Highway 90 close by my place
