In a recent thread I posted about bears being out.... There were some comments about bear being near cabins and on decks etc..... You can google pics of bear damage, but here are a few first hand experiences I've eperienced.
The first pic is my first encounter with bear damage... It was extensive, and repeated, as the bear found food... what food it did not eat (pasta, beans, rice etc....), it trampled all over.
The rest of the pics are the same thing... the bear(s) found food, and returned to see if the store had been restocked...
The two cabins in this example have been broken into since, with the second example, it gets broken into regularly, as the owner is only an occasional weekender.... In this second case I was just out hiking around and decided to do a "health and welfare check". When I was still 30-40 yards from the cabin, and the cabin wasn't even in view, I started seeing inside stuff, outside..
A bear will destroy everything in reach... they will pull stuff off walls, and they absolutely love flat screens, and monitors.... you can see the damage...
not being forceful in encouraging bears to vamoose will only cause issues later....
Remedies.....
I'm here all the time, but when I do leave, I leave a car radio playing talk radio. I have a speaker outside... Others have used methods such as leaving cans of bug spray lying around... I do know of an incident where a bear bit into a can of spray foam... so they ways to encourage bears on their way without shooting them...
A neighbor has a solar powered electric fence around his chicken coop.... he has witnessed bears testing the fence although they have not been breached...
The one thing that really doesn't work very well is boards with nails. I've seen bears just simply flip them out of the way.... well.... just secure them to the ground or deck.... right....... done that.... doesn't work...
Everyone puts up bear boards over windows and doors, but that only makes you feel better....
The best thing is to be proactive and make them unwelcome...
I have more photo's of more cabins... I just can't find them.....
