This week in the Anchorage area there were at least 2 run ins with bears. An older woman out for a walk with no gun or pepper spray, with her had the first run in, and it went downhill from there. The bear drug her off. Apparently she had something similar to a gps that sent out a signal but not precisely so it took a while a while for her to be found. The guy reporting on it on YouTube had so few details it’s hard to be clear. The bear had enough time with her if it was a predatory black bear (brown color phase) which is speculated she would have been a goner. I suspect that it was a grizzly sow with cubs. I don’t have enough details to get a feel.
There attack from today was apparently a grizzly sow. The news didn’t provide much information.
The interesting part is fish are in the creeks which are a way from where the attacks were.
I’ve heard there have been multiple attacks in Montana.
Be careful out there.

I always tell folks,, "Be bear aware!" Don't expect them to act like they are in a Disney movie!
Tyrone, people are STUPID and IGNORANT when they go into the woods, especially city folk. They expect all the wild animals to be cute and cuddily and eat food right from their hands and let them have selfie pictures taken with them. They may have had a "good" interaction with some animals and after that it doesn't matter what knowledgeable folks (Park Rangers, Fish and Wildlife wardens, etc. etc., etc. tell them. They just pooh-pooh the "naysayers" and never learn until something bad happens.

Where I live, which is adjacent to National forest, you can go 75 miles West and not encounter a single road that is open all year, and you can go 200 miles South and encounter only one road that's open all year. This is the wildest forest in the lower 48.
I don't walk to the barn or my high fenced garden without at least sticking my .44 Special in my back pocket. Grizzlies usually don't come around here, but there are plenty of them just 20 miles West and they can cover that distance in less than a day if they want. Black Bears are all over the place and yesterday I saw a huge pile of bear scat on the county road a few yards from my driveway.
Often, when I have lots of work to do in the yard, I clang pieces of metal together to help keep bears away. Hopefully a Grizzly doesn't take that for a dinner bell.
Our ancestors were wise to rid this country of Grizzlies.

We have a cabin about 150 miles north/east of Anchorage. WGI_0190.JPGHere are a couple of pictures I found on my game camera from last fall/winter at our cabin. Pretty big grizzly sow and her 2 cubs Heck yeah, I carry every time I go outside there.

Per the title of this thread... I didn't even know Alaska had any kind of sports teams... wonder what their cheerleaders look like?

If california gets its way.....the citizenry there can look forward to similar incidents

@mirglip What part of Montana are you in?

I've only seen black bears on my game cameras, but it appears there are 2 boars and 1 sow in the area. Caught a mountain lion wandering around in the middle of the day also. Yeah, I carry my SBH and my wife carries her GP100 when we are wandering around.

I don't even walk in the MN woods without something on my belt.
I can remember back in the 60's and 70's the woods of minn was devoid of most anything except grey squirrels... My first few years of deer season taught me that... I didn't see my first black bear until I was in my 30's....but things slowly started to change... now central Minn has, bear season, turkeys galore and even moose!!.... I don't see that as a bad thing as long as you are aware of it.... and no.... I don't even go to the outhouse ( in warmer months).... unarmed
