Bearcat info Please!

Howdy,

I am new to the forum but not new to Rugers. I just picked up my first pair of new Bearcats yesterday. I went out back to fire them today and a few of the rounds didn't go bang the first time.


First question: What ammo works best for these? Second question: Based on the failure to fire, can the mainspring be lightened or changed to lower power? Final question: What action work is most beneficial?

I would try different ammo at first. Each gun has their preferences. Many of us have found Federal to be a good overall brand.
A LIGHTER mainspring can give you MORE misfires. You'd want a heavier mainspring if you try that route.
Any mass manufactured firearm can be made to feel better by a good "cleaning of the action" by a good smith.

Unfortunately that's not an informative indicator. All mis-fires will look like light strikes when compared to fired cases. A fired round is shoved back against the firing pin and will always have a very deep firing pin impression compared to a mis-fire. Drop the hammer in a gun with reliable ignition on a fired case and it will look exactly like a light strike too.
 
Thanks for the replys. These are brand new guns. Some of the misfires fired when turned 180 degrees in the cylinder. I am leaning towards the ammo being the problem, but it seems to work fine in my 10-22 and Walther P22. I have other ammo and will try some different brands this weekend.

Assuming I can find ammo that goes bang, can the mainspring be lightened up? I sort of bought these to introduce my grandchildren to Cowboy shooting. The hammer springs are really stiff. I suppose it is because of the small geometry of the hammer, it needs the extra strength because the hammer is short. If any one has directions for smoothing the action, I would appreciate hearing it.

I knew that's what you meant when first asking about lighter springs and right you are, the short hammer lacks the leverage, especially for kids. You can cut off a few coils or buy aftermarket lighter hammer and trigger springs like Wolff from brownells, Midway, etc. Not expensive.

Now that I know the guns are new and unmolested, I suspect the hammer/transfer bar function is the cause of the misfires.

TO TEST: Cock and dry fire the gun but do not release the trigger. While still holding the trigger back, observe how far the firing pin is sticking out thru the recoil plate in the breechface. Now cock the hammer and using something with a flat tip like a punch, push the rear end of the firing pin in flush with the frame in the hammer slot. While holding it there, observe the firing pin again. Does it stick out slightly further? If so, the front top pad on the hammer is too long (thick) which doesn't allow the transfer bar to push the firing pin flush with the frame. File the pad down until you get full firing pin protrusion thru the recoil plate while holding the trigger back. This is not a common problem but shows up once in awhile. Particularly when hammers are swapped.

To make sure the hammer is still safe, when you go to the range, test it like this: load the cylinder as usual with the hammer on halfcock. Now with gun pointed safely downrange, cock the hammer all the way back. While holding hammer, pull the trigger and ease the hammer down just past the 1/2 cock position. Take finger off the trigger and let the hammer fall. The gun should not fire. And there should be no evidence of a light firing pin strike on the case rim. The hammer safety design is functioning properly.

For smoothing the action, the key things to check are, with hammer spring removed, the hammer revolving freely on the hammer screw; also moves back and forth freely in the frame with screw tight.

There's more you can do but just go as far as you feel competent:

A fine Arkansas sharpening stone is the professional way. But 1500 followed by 2000 grit paper on a hard (steel or glass) perfectly flat surface will do. Stay away from Dremel and other power tools. Retain all original angles when polishing critical surfaces like the trigger sear and hammer notches. Magnifying glasses and excellent light are a must to see your progress! If you don't have gunsmith glasses, you can get the 5 power specs at the drugstore for $2.

Look at all contact surfaces for evidence of the factory machine marks and focus on polishing those out. Working on a gun with some use on it is an advantage because you can see the spots where the parts rub together. Don't take off any more metal than absolutely needed to get the surfaces smooth. Also the two pins that the hammer, trigger and cylinder bolt revolve on.

Hondo's advice is right on. However, as far as spring tension is concerned there's another method in addition to installing a lighter spring kit or snipping coils, but it should be done only by a competent smith. I've had two of mine smoothed like butter by heating the hammer and trigger springs. The work was done by Tommy Burttschell of Pinehurst, Tx. In addition to the stoning, he heats the springs with a torch and goes by the color changes in the heated springs, and works his way down to the desired tension. Granted, it's more labor intensive and not as practical as Hondo's suggestions, but the results are sure great.

Thanks Hondo and Bkat. I tried some federal ammo and they all went bang. CCI standard velocity worked too. Remington thunderbolt and cyclone were less than 50%. PMC zapper was what I tried last weekend. It looks like these little critters don't like the bargain ammo. I did notice that the firing pin did not protrude very much - so that could be an issue.

But did it protrude the same amount in both tests?
 
I re-checked the firing pin protrusion last night. it looked about the same both ways. I took one of them apart. Everything looked OK, but I can see that there are some sharp edges and machine marks that need to come out. I guess that is my next project.

Update: I just bought a ShopKeeper to go with the pair of New Bearcats. The ammo that was problematic in the pair fired fine in the shopkeeper. I can see marks on the frame and hammer where they are not hitting flat. One of the hammers looks like it has a mold mark on the face. I am going to try to work them down with a stone and see it that makes a difference
