My grandson is interested in learning to shoot but the only revolvers I have that fit him are Bearcats. Problems are my only Bearcats are Old Models AND I am not in a position to buy a (even used) new model Bearcat. Ruger is still doing the safety "upgrade" so I am going to send in my Old Model for the conversion. Inbound shipping on me so costs are low. Anyone know how long the conversion takes and does Ruger send back the original parts or do they get "misplaced"?

The best safety is between the ears. The gun is only "unsafer" if the hammer is down on a loaded rounds . . . so don't do that.
Kids are smarter than most people realize. Explain why you have to load the gun that way and carry on.

Teach him to shoot the old model and he will have knowledge on how to handle them when he gets older .
I taught both my children, who are now grown adults , how to shoot with an old model Ruger Blackhawk ...
Knowing how to handle a old model SA is valuable knowledge !
Learn to load so that the hammer rests on an empty chamber ... that's goo habit even with new model .

This mechanism can be factory-installed without any further alteration. The frame and other major parts will not be affected by this Conversion. The value of the gunwill not be impaired, and we will return your original parts for collector’s purposes.

Usually Ruger sends a customer the OM parts back,, but I would not bet upon it. I would remove the OM parts first,, just as a precaution.
That said,, I fully agree that teaching a young person proper safe handling of all firearms is paramount and will actually serve them the rest of their lives.
Bill Ruger lost his very first lawsuit because a person was unsafe & mis-handled an OM & shot themselves. The judge ruled against Ruger saying; "Bill Ruger knew he had a defective design because he built the safety transfer bar system."
Bill added that crappy "warning billboard" to all the guns after that.
My son,, when he was 2,, I added locks to my gun stuff. But I also NEVER refused to allow him the opportunity to go to the range, and or to handle a gun. I taught him safety. I stressed safety & HOW to handle firearms. At the age of 7, I took him to his first gun show. About 200 tables. It took us most of the day,, because he wanted to handle a LOT of the guns.
BUT,, he had already learned safety.
First,, he'd ask permission to see a gun.
Second, he'd attempt to check the gun to see if it was empty & clear. If he didn't know how,, he'd then ask me how to check it.
Third, he'd point the gun in a manner trying to not point it at anyone.
He was never refused the opportunity to see a gun, and got several compliments on his safe gun handling.
At about 30 years old,, as a LEO,, I was with him & a few other officers. A firearm was handed to me,, and I checked it. Then I handed it to him,, and he checked it again. Another LEO made the comment; "Your Dad just checked the gun. You saw it was empty!" To which he quickly & sternly replied; "He'd kick my a** if I didn't and a solid safety rule is to always check all firearms yourself!"
I was a proud Dad that day.
Then when he & I were on the range with his daughter,, and she was learning to shoot, I stood by & never said a word. He taught his daughter the very same things I had taught him. She was 8 at the time.
An education is something that can never be stolen from you. But it's a crime if you don't share it.
Teach & preach safety.
Teach that there are many different types of firearms.
It'll be a life long lesson.

Bearcats aren't inherently unsafe.
I learned how to shoot on Colt and OM Ruger single actions, and am still alive and well 50+ years later...I even have all my fingers and toes!
Teach him how to handle firearms properly, and there will be no issues to be concerned about.

I don't teach my kids and grand kids to ever rely on manual gun safeties or built in modern passive safeties. Like those above, I teach them the mental safety logic to recognize unsafe firearm mechanisms and/or loading practices.
There's millions of single actions of different brands and ages around that don't have Ruger's new model safety features. How will Ruger's safety design protect them if they run into any of those???
We do our children and others a dis-service if we don't teach them to be the final check on firearms safety, by allowing them to rely on safety devices instead of their brains.

I was told a few weeks ago that they will NOT return the original parts. I called CS, asked the person I got, then asked them to get confirmation on this. After a couple minute hold, they said their supervisor confirmed, no parts returned.
