I feel the need to slug my revolver bbl. I want to know the size in the muzzle area and I want to know the size in the threaded area under the frame. How can I do this? If I drive a slug from the muzzle all the way out (and the breech end is smaller than the muzzle, I have heard) then I'll never know what the muzzle area slugs. Help thanks

we used some stuff called 'Cerrosafe' from Brownells.....and if you want to slug the front only you can 'block it' from the rear ,like with a wooden dowel, space it back about 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the front ( same space or more sticking out in the frame window with the cylinder removed, you'll have almost 1 3/4 inch to work with inside the frame window) now you can tap the dowel out , forward, tlll the "plug" ( Cerrosafe) falls out......think about it, not that hard to do....yes, if you do the full length, you'll only have the "smallest" ( tightest) size to measure, and they may vary, but is actually what MOST of us use, and the "old timers" can tell by how tight or loose the 'plug' gets as you are pushing it through the bore........in reality they SHOULD taper from the rear to the front and get smaller...BUT seldom if EVER happens in "production" pieces........any GOOD machinist should have the proper gauges ( indicators) to also measure both the lands and the grooves up front for you, may be easier .....

Thanks guys. I'm learning a lot of stuff here. I need to know as much as possible before I lay down a lot of cash for unnecessary parts or smith work.

I agree that "Cerrosafe" is the best way to go. You can buy a 1 lb block,, and it's reusable.

I used Cerrobend (Lipowitz's metal) in my working life since it was invented about 30 years ago, but never miked it. I am told that it does change size a bit when it is first cooling, for about the first hour. I think it's great to use it, but you should have a standard, like your cylinder throat with a plug gauge and then use CerroSafe with that. Measure the o.d. of the warm poured slug over the first hour and see if it changes at all. JMHO
