Woke up at my usual 5 AM, got up and made coffee, and turned computer on. It said 4:20 AM--GRRRR.
Now I'm up with 2 cups down the hatch and no chance of going back to nap.

Yep, me too. Since my alarm clock is an old telephone I had expected it to set the clock automatically. Apparently not when in airplane mode  I got up at 0500. Went for my AM walk. Playing "Words with Friends" with my daughters best friend that is a nurse working nights. 8)

Mr Slick, my cat generally is let outside at 5:30 when I get up. This morning he was on the bed pulling the covers off me at 4:30 with this "Hey, you are supposed to be up and let me go to the outside sandbox. Whats with this sleeping in stuff?" It is very difficult explaining DST and EST to a cat. :D :D

I woke up too about 4:20 this morning. I set all my clocks last night so I knew what time it was and that annoyed me to be up so early. I made a cup of coffee and turned on a movie and finally fell back asleep for an hour or so. Up at 7:00 and feeling good. No excuse for skipping church now I guess.

I made the transition to clocks that are reset every night from WWV,
several years ago. Now I only have to reset the microwave and the
clock on the stove.

I will admit to waking up in the one hour overlap and thinking it was
amazing that I had slept so little. I also found that one of my clocks
resets itself on a different cycle than the others (it's back on track
this morning).

I'll third or tenth of one hundredth the let's get rid of DST!
It doesn't save ANYTHING!

Oddly enough I over slept by about an hour and a half... got up put the coffee on and then when to my office and glanced at my cell phone and realized I had technically only over slept by a half hour.

I'm glad that we don't have to mess with that here in Arizona. Unfortunately, I'm leavinhg in less than 3 weeks for a long overseas assignment. I still have to keep track of the time differences when calling and chatting with family and friends, but that's not quite as critical.

Hi,

I have to reset all my non-electronic clocks manually--computers, cell phones and GPS all do their thing automatically. I usually check in with the USNO website to synch the watch, and learned a few years ago to go there early Sat night before the crowds hit! Last night's visit also led me to a couple of other sites I'd always meant to visit but hadn't gotten around to, including NIST and some stories about WWV and WWVH (Hawaii.) Unfortunately, the long antenna for the shortwave radio is packed away, so WWV doesn't always come in with the built in antenna, including last night.

Has anybody who's listened to these stations ever looked up all the info they pack into that "tick, tick" signal that's broadcast constantly? If one has nothing better to do than listen, it's interesting to hear what the nerds are up to! For those who have short wave radios, it's available at 5, 10 and 15 MHz (sometimes listed as 5000, 10000 and 15000kHz as on my radio) depending on time and location. The main transmitters are pretty much right in Pat's back yard, so he can probably pick up the regular low power transmissions at 2.5 and 20MHz, as well as an experimental low power signal at 25MHz, too.

If you've never listened or don't have a short wave radio, here's a sample, with an explanation of all the ticks and dings and beeps: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WWV_time_signal_-_20090904.ogg If you can hear all that, your ears are far better than mine!

Used to be a daily check for me to make at the Kotzebue Flight Service Station when I was an electronic technician trainee. Check the station clock against the WWV time tick each morning.

No problem here with time

We don't play those stupid games

Hi,

Stupid games sometimes come back to bite you!

My grandfather retired from a power company in KS and was going to come live in CA. On his way, he stopped at Hoover Dam, both to see it, and also to put faces to the names and voices of two gentlemen he'd dealt with on the phone for quite a number of years, buying and selling power from/to them. He was a system operator, a job done entirely by computer today.

At Hoover Dam, he went on a tour which led him to meet one of the two fellows. The second one had recently retired, and my grandfather got talked into working another year or year and a half in his place, training a replacement to do the job. We went to visit him--I was just a little kid at the time--and he took us thru a lot of stuff one might not see on a tour. Included was a big office room. Right down the middle of it was a line painted on the floor, with a clock on each side of the line, and a small sign under each. One said NV, the other said AZ.

Grandpa told a story on the Zonies that was funny even to a five year old. It seemed shift changes happened at the same time for guys working on both sides of the line. That was fine during the summer, when both States were on the same time. But in the winter, the Zonies P&M'd something fierce, cuz THEY had to work an hour longer than the NV guys. At least according to the clocks on half the wall. Oh, well... and sixty years later, they're probably still whining! ;)

Before I retired, DST gave me an extra hour of daylight to work at home which was mostly OK since I needed all the time I could make or steal.
Now that I don't have a set schedule, DST is generally a pain in the butt. Woke up at 4 AM (DST)again this morning. It will take a while to reset the internal clock. On the other hand, hunting season is just around the corner so I'm already on the "way before dawn" schedule. Compound this with a trip to Colorado(Mtn Time Zone) and my sleep/wake sequence is euchred for the next 3 weeks.
