In Memphis, near the University of Memphis, is Highland Street, and that section nearest the university is known as "The Strip." During the 'Sixties it was the hippie hangout, and today is lined with small individually owned shops. And it abounds with street people. Here, too, is located my alteration shop, of which I have spoken elsewhere.
As I sat waiting for my trousers to be hemmed, a big black man, known as "Bighand" came in and borrowed some money from the shop owner. Then another street man came in and thanked the shop owner. Seems he had been hungry, and the shop owner had given him a chicken salad sandwich.
The street person came back to thank George, and said, "As I sat down to eat that sandwich, ol' John kept looking at it. I asked him if he'd had anything to eat, and he said 'No.' so I give him half of it. Mr. George, you fed two folks with that sandwich today."
