Friend who is more of a gun enthusiest than me.... decided to open a fireplace wood stove store down in Tampa Florida (yea... think about it). while he sat around waiting for customers to show up that is exactly what he would do with any number of his NFA suppressed weapons....
Same at my old house. Stack some logs and set up a target when the wife wasn't home. I could reliability test mods etc without having to take a trip to the range. Of course now a trip to the range is walking out the basement door.

First time flying my drone- first video- first attempt to post a video from it.
During the pandemic when the gun ranges were shut down I set up a target in the garage (don't have enough property to shoot outside) along with a couple of pellet CO2 pistols and rifles (already had a Daisy Red Ryder) and some old single shot 22 LR rifles with my C&R license. Also have a .22 Long H&R Trapper and a H&R break open Premier neither of which I take to the range anymore. For the .22's I got some CCI CB 22 Long and Quiet-22 22 LR. The CB's are no louder than the CO2 especially from a rifle. The Quiet-22 is quite a bit noisier so I just use them in a rifle. Granted not much of a challenge with a rifle but the distance with a revolver is the same as I do most of the time at the range. Scratched the shooting itch and I still shoot there when the weather is bad or I don't have time to get to the range.
I've shot a mouse on two different occasions about 35 years or when I lived in my old mobile home, or trailer as we call them here. If that counts. One kept coming through the living room while I was watching TV. The other one was under the sink in the kitchen. I used a single six. Those were the good old day.
I know a guy who shot a rat(no, really, a four legged rat) in his bedroom with a 12 gauge. It was a mobile home and the exit hole in the side was almost 12" wide. I've never known the guy to drink so I suppose he was just that mad about the rat in his house.
I've shot some of the primer powered plastic case & bullet 'toy' loads in the basement. Even just the primer was LOUD.

I've shot .22 in the basement when we used to live in UT. More recently in OR I also remember when one of the owners of the car dealership I worked at tried out his new .22 in the shop…those phone books came in handy as a backstop.
I'd love to be able to shoot in my back yard- I live in an area where it's legal but we all have 5 acre parcels and the neighbors are too close. Plus my wife doesn't want me spooking the horses. At some point I may buy a supressor for my 22/45 and my American rifle.

When I was little my dad bought one of those Daisy BB traps and we would shoot my Daisy Cub in the basement.

When I was little I built a backstop with books and paper and would shoot my pellet gun at targets in the bedroom. Glad my parents never found out.
I’ve been tempted to try some subsonic or some kind of quiet 22 in my Winchester 67 on a pesky groundhog in my yard. Or 300BO suppressed… I live in the city…

Actually,, as shown by the various stories above,, yes,, some folks would practice with .22's in their homes/basements. And yes,, there were .22 cal bullet traps sold many years ago. Often,, the folks would use .22 shorts for the ammo.
As for shooting rats etc,, I have a friend,, who was raised in Asheville NC,, who lived in a plain older house. The walls were cement blocks. And yes,, the occasional rat would get in. When they suspected it,, they would turn out the lights in the kitchen,, except for a single bulb that lit the area just enough. They would hang a small piece of bacon from a string,, and sit in the living room & shoot the rats as they tried to get the bacon. He & I were just talking about that a few weeks ago.

Several years back, we had some serious mouse incursions. Nothing tunes up your 'house clearing' skills like a flashlight and pellet pistol midnight mouse hunt. o_O

If one insists on shooting a rat or mouse in the house, wax bullets would be good to use. But you have to be careful. Even hitting a flat wall 12 feet from you, those things have a ricochet tendency to bounce back at you. And, they hurt. If you're just target shooting like in a garage you can hang a heavy tarp in back of the target. They won't bounce back when they hit that.
