Add-ons to my Mk IV

Recently added a can (Silencerco Sparrow) and a Millett red dot sight to my Mk IV. Sighted it on off the front porch rail a couple of evenings ago - fun to shoot w/o need for hearing protection and the red dot is pretty cool. Now it just needs a better trigger...

I have a MK3 22/45 with a VQ trigger 'kit' that has proven to be capable of 3MOA @ 100 yards. Everyone who shoots it tries to buy it from me but I'm NOT SELLING. :rolleyes:

I never saw the need for a can on a 22lr pistol. Even HV ammo is subsonic at normal barrel lengths. I never use hearing protection for shooting 22lr outdoors. Indoors yes. Larger calibers yes (except when hunting).

But I don't (often) shoot in my neighborhood. There's laws against shooting in city limits and ordinances against it in my HOA. But I have taken out a few problem bunnies using a 22lr rifle with Quiet ammo. No neighbor ever complained (they probably were doing the same thing).

My experience is the opposite: although .22LR from a pistol is subsonic, it is far louder than from a rifle; a rifle is generally at the edge of hearing safe without a can, while a pistol is distinctly not and will leave ears ringing with even SV ammo.

Regarding the trigger. You could have done that to a Mark I and not had to worry about the crappy overcomplicated lockworks and its lousy tirgger.

I think you're missing the point. :rolleyes:
Even though the BULLET is sub-sonic, the same amount of powder is being burned resulting in more muzzle blast from the shorter pistol barrel.
When you mount an effective suppressor to control the muzzle blast, THEN the difference between a supersonic and subsonic bullet is noticeable.

I’ve got a MKIV 22/45 with the fire sights and a second upper that’s threaded and has a Viridian green dot. That one will be getting a can at some point.

I have a couple of those TK kits hanging on the wall. Both for MKIV 22/45. About time I put them in something.

Absolutely!

Permanent hearing damage on impulse noise begins at around 140dB. Most 22LR ammo through rifle barrels runs roughly at 140-141dB in milspec testing, and through pistols somewhere around 154dB. The physical intensity of the sound waves doubles with every 3dB increase, so when firing a pistol, your unprotected ear takes something over eight times the hearing-damaging impact you would have from a rifle firing the same ammunition at the same distance from your ear.

I'm talking about energy transfer here, not how it sounds to the human ear subjectively. The human ear adjusts the hearer's subjective sense of environmental noise, so every 10 DB increase sounds subjectively to the human ear like roughly doubling the sound. That's why it's so easy to take permanent damage without realizing it's happening. It sounds like it's "just a little louder," when in fact the delicate structure of your inner ear is absorbing a much more massive impact.

Shooting 22LR pistols, and even rifles, without ear pro or a suppressor is a short road to permanent hearing damage. I have the (fortunately mild) tinnitus to prove it.

No offense intended, but that general a question amounts to a heavy duty thread hijack. I suggest you start a new thread after searching out and reading the many threads on that question on this forum.

That said, I mostly use a Dead Air Mask, Rugged Oculus, and Otter Creek Labs Titanium 22. None are cheap, but all are top-tier, nearly indestructible, and easily maintained. There are many other excellent ones, and quite a few not so good.
