I think I first heard this story told by Minnie Pearl many years ago.
There was this lady near twenty five years of age and never married. Usually referred to as old maid or spinster, she preferred "unclaimed blessing." She was going to visit some distant relatives on the train. As darkness was coming on the train stopped unexpectedly, and in a minute or two a man entered the car with a drawn gun.
Now dusk was the best time for train robbery, as it would be dark by the time a posse could be rounded up it would be too dark for tracking, and you'd have a good head start by morning.
The hold up man covered everybody with his revolver and announced, "This here's a robbery. I want every man to hand over his watch and money. And I'll kiss all the women before I leave!"
Now a brave gent stood up and looked right down the barrel of that .44 and announced, "I'll give you my money and watch, but you leave the women alone!"
At this the unclaimed blessing stood up and said, "Jesse James is robbin' this train, and he knows what he's doing!"
