A Question For Flatgate

Or anyone else that fitted a Grip Frame to the 44 Magnum Anniversary Model.

What does this Lobe on the Pawl Do? The one on the left is from my Single-Six as a referance.

Does it need to contact the Grip Frame and do I need to transfer the Knotch/Ramp exactly over to the Grip Frame I'm fitting?

That's a free spin pawl. Unfortunately,I do not recall who invented it. Probably one of the "big name" Ruger 'smiths. Ruger combines a "free spin" pawl, which retracts out of contact with the cylinder's ratchet when the hammer is "at rest", with their own "Reverse Indexing Pawl" which is a simple spring and plunger that prevents reverse rotation of the cylinder, to come up with a cylinder that lines up with the loading recess when it "clicks".

Remove the little allen screw and the spring and plunger and replace the screw. Voila', a free spin cylinder.

The "notch" in the grip frame is a "clearance" cut for the gate detent spring.

So what do I do about the Knotch and Lobe? Lob off the Lobe and not worry about the Knotch in the GF? Or just knotch the GF to clear the Lobe?.....................................

I'll try to make this a bit easier. The "lobe", as you call it, contacts the rear of the ratchet pad in the cylinder frame when the hammer is lowered to the "full forward" position. That contact then rotates the pawl back, out of contact with the ratchet "star" on the rear of the cylinder. When this occurs the cylinder is free to spin either direction. (Ruger's spring and plunger Reverse Indexing Pawl is located such that it "clicks" and retains the cylinder's chambers in alignment with the loading recess.)

So, I've never carved a "notch" in a grip frame during a swap. If you have trouble getting the grip frame to set "flush" with the cylinder frame then you may need to make some clearance for the gate spring.

Of course strip the gun down as far as you possibly can when fitting the grip frame then try the fit with the trigger in place, then the hammer in place, then the hammer and trigger in place, then the hammer and pawl and trigger, etc., etc., etc.

Thanks for your help :) . I assembled the 44 with the new GF without notching the GF and the Gun seems to function just fine. Sorry if I seem a little dense :oops: , I just don't want to ruin my gun, I'm learning as I go along.
I happen to luck out that the XR3 bolted right up to my Single-Six without too much trouble.
All I have left to do is some polishing and press in the Trigger Spring Retaining Pin and the Grip Panel Dowel and I'm good to go :mrgreen:................................................
