Today, due to the Covid virus,, the "normal" visitation for my friend, the retired LEO was changed a bit.
We had a "drive by" visitation.
The town of Hendersonville NC blocked off several streets, making traffic flow one direction. In front of the County Sheriff Dept, my friend's flag draped casket laid in state. Flanked on both sides by sharply dressed officers, and an Honor Guard of 6 officers flanking the 2 others,,, as well. And a SMALL number of spaced family members sat to one side. On the opposite side, sat a Harry Gant Skoal Bandit #33 Nascar car,, (Elvi was a huge fan, and it was well known. Local Nascar folks stepped up for this. ). A FD had a large American Flag flew over the highway.
We were allowed to slowly drive by, and "visit" as best we could.
I stopped, bowed my head, said a brief prayer, waved to his family and moved along to allow the MANY others the ability to visit as best they could.

That sounds very nice. It’s good to hear about a community pulling together in times like these. I bet it was nice you had a chance to say goodbye to your friend.

Thanks Kevin.
Elvi was truly a good person AND officer. I felt the manner that they were able to honor him with all the crap going on was pretty good. The #33 car was excellent & made a lot of us smile.

I have a relative whose funeral was postponed a month ago thinking this would be over in a few days or couple of weeks. I've not heard if the immediate family went forward with a private service or everything is still on hold. Just so many aspects of "normal" life that are being affected.

Hi,

I'm glad you got to "see" your friend and say "Good bye" one last time, Ty.

It's good to see people figuring out "workarounds" in times like these. I drove by Riverside National Cemetery today, and the gates were open for visitors, but since "gatherings" of over 2 people who don't live in the same house have been put on hold, I didn't see any cars along the front part of the cemetery. I'm not sure if any of our cemeteries are even having services. Are mortuaries holding people's loved ones until this situation gets better, or are they simply burying people, with plans to have a service later? I really don't know...

I think burials are happening,, with just a very select few family members who are trying to social distance themselves somewhat. Many are planning future "celebrations of life" for those whom we have lost.
