Might be fun...

I hate Halloween. It's stupid and it makes all the people from the other parts of town, other towns, and even another State crowd my neighborhood and block the only street with access to my street.

This is one "holiday" or "celebration" that is no longer fun to us.

It used to be that kids would have to wait until just about dark to even go out. Then they would roam the neighborhoods & "trick or treat" folks.
Now,, it's go to a "party" well before dark, and go to known places to get free candy. And then there are the adults who have gone way overboard with decorations. Heck, in SC,, not terribly far from us here,, the people at one house makes up their house to look like it's on fire & has prompted a few calls to the local FD. And from what I've heard,, they do things like staging a fake car wreck or other such stuff. Next,, add in all the stupid horror movies and the way they all try to "out horror" each other with so much gore, & stupid stuff.
So,, we pass on it here.
But if others want to celebrate it,, fine. We prefer not to.

... and it's not just the situation here at this house for the last 20 years. I was brought up to think Halloween is stupid and pointless. Plus we have the wussification of it too with people pushing kids in strollers and the trick or treating starting at 6 PM. I live near the historic district and the street is blocked with people driving 1 MPH with their liftgates open and sometimes car doors. People pull trailers full of kids and because both sides are lined with cars, there's only one lane in the center of the road for both directions of commuters to pass.

Growing up in rural S.C. I really don't remember anything much about halloween... what we had was a Fall Carnival. where all the kids came to a big event and played different games and such and got a prize or candy. Never went house to house just to the carnival.... now that I think about it there was a house of horrors there and we did usually wear a costume.

Now it just seems like another event to buy stuff for. Seems it totally blankets Thanksgiving.

When we lived in Morristown NJ, the town’s businesses downtown around the square would host a giant Halloween party.

It was on the 31st and so all the kids would get dressed up and go. It was more fun than going door to door trick or treating.

Now in our neighborhood there are a lot of kids but they live a few blocks away. So no one ever makes it up to our part of the hood. We might get two or three kids.

Around here, it has been for a long time that if your porch light is on, you are inviting kids to stop by for treats. Pretty peaceful, no rowdiness but our section of the neighborhood is more older folks, some decorate but nothing outrageous. We're the last house on a dead end (for now) street and rarely get any kids so we just turn the light off and go about our normal evening business.

party poopers!

even in 2020 when there wasn't a pumpkin in sight, I found a way for my kids to carve their "jack-o-lanterns" 🎃

something fun for little kids, mine have just about outgrown it.

this year son will be passing out candy at home with me, or maybe at one of his football buddy's house, and daughter will be out trick-or-treating with Mrs. Bee close behind.

we had so much fun at those ages!

I grew up in the country so trick or treat was LOTS of walking. Every one knew ever one. Today, in my neighborhood, they bring kids in busses. Never seen them before and won't again till next year. My light will not be on!

I took a really cute purse to my favorite waitress tonight. A couple of gun guys were sitting next to me, and one was sharing some pics from this past weekend. This guy took his wife, kids, and some friends out to the range to carve pumpkins.

I didn't catch the range they did the carving, but they made the jack-o-lantern faces with 22s. They were very cool, and they had a blast making them.

In the country at the end of dead end dark street. Even the neighborhood kids don't come by here.

Daughter and SIL live in fancy subdivision in small town. Wide streets and sidewalks. They get absolutely hammered with all the country kids that come into town for treats. First couple of years they spent a small fortune on candy. They would get 200-300 door knockers. Pretty sure they just leave the house dark and go out to dinner now.

For those that do buy piles of candy---do you notice how small the portions are these days, but the price continues to climb.

Back in my day there always seemed to be a handful of houses that actually gave out full size candy bars. Bet you don't see any of that these days.

Can't see your posted pics. All that shows up is the URL. But I can see them in preview when I quote you. Off topic but just pointing out the error I have been talking about for a week and a half.

thank you for pointing that out! I use dropbox free version for about 15 years now and have had to change the file naming to embed pictures a couple of times. I'll check it out :)

We, too, turn off our outdoor lights to indicate we aren't giving out any more candy. Until then, whenever kids ring the doorbell, I always step outside, take a piece of candy from my container and place it in the kids' bags. I also always look to see whether the kids are accompanied by their parents and say "hi" to those parents who are present. I want those parents to see me and see that I am depositing the candy.

I generally know, at least by sight, most of the adults in our neighborhood (about 100 homes) and I wave at them whenever they drive by my yard. I want them to know I am approachable, accountable and friendly.

Recently ne'er-do-wells have begun placing tainted treats on front porches. So, every time I open my door, I look to see whether any such "not-mine" treats have been placed near my door.

In our neighborhood, the number of trick-or-treat visitors at our house each Halloween varies from 25 to 50. Weather is the primary determining factor, although the 'Rona virus scare also had an impact. The little cuties show up before dark, while the teenagers (who rarely wear costumes) show up well after dark. We try to turn off the lights shortly after the first group of teenagers hits our front door.

I don't think it's you. I think it's my computer settings or the forum but I had a lot of trouble getting help. I think help is on the way though I just haven't yet gotten to the topic.
