9mm reload advice

Thanks im excited just sucked it up and bought 2 more lbs of unique from my towns gun store. Can someone explain this. (Well nvm had a link but wont let me paste) on gunbroker search smokeless powder and there is a 4lb jug aliant pistol for $220 and 48 ship 12 people have bid on it still has 2 days .... is this powder that scarce or is this top grade stuff ..... ps thats my girlfriends pretty purple lc9 I dont carry a purple gun love shooting it though

A 4lb jug of Power Pistol shipped for $220 is absolutely outrageous. People are nuts. Should not be more than $150.

If you are going to buy powder through the mail get at least enough to pay for the $25 HazMat fee. I never buy less than 6lbs of powder or 5x1000 primers.

I use 7 gr. of AA5 in the 9MM and get 1200 fps more or less depending on the gun it is fired in.

1000 rounds to the pound means that you would have about 2 cents in the powder, 7.6 cents in the bullet, and a 3 cent primer would come to 12.6 cents pr. round.

This is assuming that you know where to buy components at a price less than retail.....as most handloaders do....8)

Im a noob to reloading maybe 2 months of reasearch and buying my setup

If there are any trap or skeet shooters in your area, just ask them where they buy their components.....these guys always know the places that sell at the best prices... 8)

On the subject of plated bullets, well, this will probably raise the ire of many here but I don't like them. From my experience, they're about the same price as jacketed (shop around & you'll see), can't be driven as fast & are not as accurate....IMHO.

I shot all of the remaining ones I had & will never buy another unless that's all there is available.

Lol. Im havint some trouble now the first 6 mags locked the slide back with 4.8 ... I went shooting yesterday and shot about 5 more clips and it didnt lock back on 4 of the empty mags starting to think its not powerful enough now .. wierd though recoil and ejection are fine

Sometimes, 'fast' powders exhibit this condition due to the timing of their pressure curve.

This is why I regularly recommend powders more 'in the middle' for 9x19, powders like AA5 / Unique / Silhouette / HS6 / Power Pistol.

Lol. Im havint some trouble now the first 6 mags locked the slide back with 4.8 ... I went shooting yesterday and shot about 5 more clips and it didnt lock back on 4 of the empty mags starting to think its not powerful enough now .. wierd though recoil and ejection are fine

Some pistols need a bit more pressure than others in order to function correctly.
If you are still loading a 115 bullet, you might want to step your charge up a bit. I'd try 5.0 and work towards 5.5 untill function improved.
On the other hand, if you are going for minimum powder usage, you might try a 124 bullet over your present (4.8 ) change.

Yup!

That's quite often the case, and seems counterintuitive at first. But the deal is the heavier bullet is harder to get moving (remember that guy Newton who got bonked on the head with the apple? ) so one must often reduce the powder charge to avoid building up excessive pressures.

Watch your books VERY carefully. As a general rule, what you'll find is that when working up a load, one can use a lighter bullet with the powder charge for a heavier one, but shouldn't go the other way.

Wow big thanks on that ..I always research before but since lyman doesnt like plated and I have to find ny loads if I went with a heaver load of plated I probably would have just added oowder and tested

Hi,

Remember, too, with those plated bullets: most mfrs suggest you use lead recipes, NOT jacketed. That plating is essentially cosmetic (just a few thousandths thick) and controls airborne lead nicely (indoor ranges can be particular about that issue) but generally performance falls off if loaded too warm. Also, you'll see lead recipes usually call for less powder in a given bullet weight than those for jacketed bullets. Read carefully, err on the side of caution (aka lower velocities: my best results have been in the .38 Spl range, around 800-900 fps), and plated bullets should be satisfactory!

Allowing only an $80.00 budget for a Turret Press is a little low. I think you'll be dissatisfied with that Lee turret find a good single stage instead or save enough to buy a redding turret press which I think is the best turret out there. Good luck

I think I meant is was buying a lee progressive unless I found a single stage for under 80 it wouldnt make it worth it to me when a progressive can be purchased with dies under 200
