Not a 21st century car -Today in 1965. It was a very good year for Craig Breedlove. He strapped on a seat attached to a Navy turbo jet engine and "pushed the red button".

The Spirit of America. For a concept of the stones that guy had - in 1964 he pushed the car over 500 mph (about 740 fps) and the brake chute snapped off. Breedlove violently rolled on for FIVE MILES, finally vectored off the track, through a group of telephone poles, and speared into a lake on the salt flats. He escaped himself, punched his way through the rooftop hatch and securing a new record: 526.28 mph!
The team deduced the steering was nearly useless a half-mile after the chute lines snapped, so he was literally riding the will of God for another 4 /12 miles at hundreds of miles per hour! A man, a jet, and wheels. Buy that man a drink!

1965.
It is all just another page in a kid's history book today.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh yea but us old farts remember seeing and hearing about it when it happened. Hell I am History.

I always thought of that as a somewhat more complex and expensive version of "Hey, hold my beer and watch this".

Walt Arfons challenged Breedlove's record with his "Green Monster" which was probably the most extreme looking jet car ever.
There's a story that Mario Andretti was at Bonneville one season when Arfons was running. He was staring into the cockpit and said to Arfons, "I don't know how you do it."
Arfons asked, "How I do what?"
Andretti replied, "How you fit in that tiny seat with the big balls it takes to drive this car!"

Breedlove has been pitching building a new car for the last several years https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2014/06/05/craig-breedlove-laying-plans-for-new-land-speed-record-attempt/

He's suing the Chicago museum where he lent his first car for damage they did to it.

We were at a city meeting in Wendover Utah one speedweek. The little old ladies were complaining about people openly drinking in town and at the track. One big burley biker got up and said "lady I ride a fuel Harley over 200 mph. You think I'd climb on that thing if I wasn't drunk?" BTW if they catch you drinking on the salt they will ask/insist you leave.
